I confess, I was extremely disappointed with Christine Ha's cookbook when it came out and swore I would not buy another MasterChef cookbook without looking through it first. So instead of pre-ordering this title online I waited until I could look through it in a store--and then I couldn't leave without buying it! There were recipes within I wanted to try right away, didn't look too complicated and yes, looked very authentically Italian.

I am Italian by heritage and have been to Italy many times. I also have a TON of Italian cookbooks so a new one has to really have some interesting and new ideas in it for me to buy it. I liked how this book was organized into sections on typical Italian antipasti and small bites (like crostini), primi, secondi, desserts. The emphasis is also on more Northern Italian cuisine--like you would find in Venice or Friuli--so this is not your typical red gravy Italian-American cookbook. The recipes I've tried so far have turned out excellent, including the crostini with ricotta, honey and pine nuts and the risotto with sausage and radicchio. Many of these recipes appear very simple at first but you will find some interesting flavor twist that really elevates them to a different level; for instance, the orecchiette pasta with zucchini which has a surprising addition of mint with the ricotta cheese that makes it truly unique (and addictive!)

He does use certain flavor/ingredient combinations repeatedly (beet and goat cheese, for instance), but that reflects popular ingredients of specific regions and how you can use those ingredients in multiple ways. The instructions are very thorough and clear, and you will really be turning out meals that look and taste restaurant-quality if you follow Luca!

I echo the other reviewer's comment about the Caprese Panna Cotta. I got the cookbook just for that wacky dessert!

If you're like me who spent most of the time watching season 4 of Masterchef salivating over the dishes Luca made and wishing I could reproduce them at home, this cookbook is absolutely perfect. Some dishes that are included in this cookbook:

-The braised short ribs that sent Gordon Ramsay "six feet under a happy man"/ the dish he wanted as his last meal
-The broccoli rabe ravioli/ girasoli that Luca made during the audition
-Frico, along with the pancetta wrapped veal cutlet from the semi-final
-The lemon asparagus Luca made for his wife

Granted, these dishes that Luca actually made in the competition are a bit more technical and complex compared to the rest of the simpler/ more homestyle dishes in the cookbook, but I was so so so happy that these dishes were included. Luca gave the full recipe for each of these dishes, with all the different components, but then gives us the option to leave out some of the components if we are not feeling too technical (such as the basil sugar from the caprese panna cotta-- which apparently you can sprinkle on top of creme brulee and caramelize it-- how awesome is that?!)

Will update with more details once I've tried out the recipes.

I bought this cookbook for my husband because we both watched Master Chef and really pulled for Luca to win. The book was disappointing though because there really aren't any recipes for "everyday" types of foods. I hope the Luca makes millions from his cookbook but, for us, it really isn't very usable - way too many "fancy" recipes and way too many ingredients in most of them. We'd spend a fortune on buying all the different odd ingredients.

My wife and I watched the final episode of Season 4 of MasterChef at the edge of our seats because it was such a tight match between Luca and Natasha. We loved Luca's perseverance and positive spirit from the start, so seeing him win felt like a real victory to us too! We haven't yet been to his restaurant in NY but this book is the next best thing. The recipe for his "impossible dessert" is reason alone to buy the book, it blew away the judges, and never left my memory. As a total novice to dessert making I haven't yet attempted the Caprese Panna Cotta, but someday soon... So far, I'm just delighted by the narrative of the book, variety of recipes, and photographs.

We cook out of this cookbook weekly. Everything has been very impressive in presentation & flavors. It's not very complicated either. The white asparagus risotto is worth every cent alone. It's the best risotto recipe we have tasted. Great job Luca!

great recipes and stories. I normally wouldn't order a cookbook from a TV show but Luka is so authentically Italian! Some of the recipes call for items I just can't get where I live but it's great that Luca points out substitutions that are easy to find. The pictures are high quality and the cover and paper are high quality.

One thing I don't like about this book is that many of the recipes are for more than one item, like a protein and a sauce but the recipe ingredient list and directions are all lumped into one. So if you wanted to make just the sauce or just the protein, you have to pick through the directions and pick out what you need. Inconvinient but not enough as to prevent me from using. I love this book and can't wait to try more recipes.

FYI - His recipe for "My Mother's Meatballs" are without a doubt the best meatballs I've ever tasted, I cant wait to try more!
