3.0 out of 5 stars A pretty good EP by a great band
This EP is acoustic. It includes a couple of pretty good covers and some original songs. Brother's Slayer is a great song, though! One of my personal favorites. Other than that, get "Elegy"-it's worth your cash more than "My Kantele" is.

The tape version of this recording has "Black Winter Day" ep on reverse and is another classical/FolK inspired metal deligHt. Treat your ears. This is definitely a beautiful piEce of music and a wonderful find and lifts the spirits and edifIes aNd educAtes as it is based on the Finnish Epic poeMs of the "EDDas." Tempt yourself aNd I darEyou to venture into this realm. acclAim from critics is what these guys have and the fans speak for themselves. Amorphous means formless another reviewer pointed out, and this band is surEly as uncategorizable as the shapeshiFters of ancient lore. Bravo Amorphis, fiVe stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredibly varied and with great atmospheres, July 3, 2003
This review is from: My Kantele (Dig) (Audio CD)
the opening title track in its acoustic version stays in your
mind forever. all the songs coming next are a smooth, flawless progression. amorphis gives the covers a new
vibe making them seem like its their very own music.
totally amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars The most progressive effort of Amorphis, January 13, 2002
By
"kirvesmies" (Espoo, Finland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Kantele (Dig) (Audio CD)
The "My Kantele EP" is by no doubt the most "progressive" album from Amorphis so far and it is also one of my long time favourites and in my opinion - one of Amorphis' best works. The first track, 'My Kantele', is of course a beautiful song, and I must say I prefer the acoustic reprise which is on this EP. The two-part 'Brother-Slayer' -song is .. well, astonishingly good. The first part is kind of the story-telling part and the song spins off to some sort of psychedelic jamming (great, but I would have wanted more!). Levitation , a cover of Hawkwind's song, has in my opinion, even more "drive" in it than the original did. The albums' last track, 'And I Hear You Call' is by no doubt a successful cover in honour of a late Finnish top-notch cult band Kingston Wall and its late leader, singer/guitarist Pete Walli. The song itself is very nice and the band does a surprisingly good job in it, though I must say nobody beats Sami Kuoppamäki, the Kingston Wall drummer.. sorry ;) And about the death vocals in the verse, well.. kind of reminds me of Amorphis' cover of classic The Doors song "Light My Fire" which surely has some divided opinions. Anyways a great EP and surely worth checking out -well, unless if you dislike anything that even reminds something slightly progressive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Returning to their roots, December 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: My Kantele (Dig) (Audio CD)
Here's a CD that demonstrates something every band should do at least once in its lifetime -- give tribute in music to its influences and roots. Amorphis does a fine job of this with the folk-tinged "My Kantele (Acoustic Reprise)" and the 70s-era roots-metal/hard-rock feel of the other four tracks. This EP is a very good change of pace from a band that's spent most of its lifetime cranking out death metal tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not really Amorphis' style, but good anyway!, November 21, 2000
This review is from: My Kantele (Dig) (Audio CD)
This EP doesn't really represent Amorphis' style of music, but they showed that they can play other kinds of music as well. Great songs, very melodic, but NOT HEAVY METAL. If you heard one of Amorphis' earlier records (The Karelian Isthmus, Tales from the Thousand Lakes - awesome CDs) chances are you will like this, too, although the music is a very different style. Take a peek with RealAudio!

1.0 out of 5 stars i like amorphis - but this ep sucks!, April 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: My Kantele (Dig) (Audio CD)
I like Amorphis, i really do, but this is ep is a waste of money. If you are interested in hearing amorphis, this ep doesn't really represent their sound. Go out and buy The Karelian Isthmus, Tales of the Thousand Lakes, Black winter day(ep), Elegy , and Tounela. Take it from a fan - THIS ep SUCKS! After hearing this i was a little worried they were going to sell out. I heard Tounela, and to my surprise they didn't. One last word of advice: DO NOT BUY THIS EP!
