5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the days when country was proud to be country..., November 23, 2005
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
Lately, country music has taken a pop-leaning trend. I'm not saying this is wrong; I'm not here to comment on that. What I AM here to say is this: Ray Scott's MY KIND OF MUSIC takes you back to the days of Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, George Jones, David Allan Coe, and others who were proud to be country singers...and it's no coincidence that the afore-mentioned artists are mentioned repeatedly throughout this album.

This is a CD of small towns, of ordinary people, of broken hearts and burning desire. It's an album where an in-your-face anthem of individuality ("Plowboy") can stand alongside a sensual, Conway Twitty-esque ballad ("I Didn't Come Here to Talk"). It's an album about the passage of time and the perseverance of faith. It is a testament of nonconformity...a traditional country album that may just manage to attract non-country listeners, much in the way the Outlaw Movement of the 70's did. When something is this honest, you can't help but listen.

That's MY KIND OF MUSIC (and mine, too). Ray Scott is the shot in the arm that country music has been needing--his deep, rich baritone, combined with his superb songwriting skills (he wrote or cowrote every track here) and ear for a good lyric or lick, makes him stand out in the country music market. Will he be a superstar? If this was thirty years ago, then I'd say yes, without a doubt. Today, what with the drum machines and screaming electric guitars, it's hard to say. What I can tell you is this: MY KIND OF MUSIC is one of the few debut albums I've heard that not only promises, but FULFILLS it's promise. This is truly a country record, no matter how you look at it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Nashville debut since "Killin' Time", January 22, 2006
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
No joke. Ray Scott writes his own tunes and all of them are gems. No one has even attempted to write a song like "Different Kind of Cowboy", which should become an anthem for every country boy who isn't from Texas and gets tired of being told that if he doesn't have 300 head of cattle and a Dodge Dually then he's not really country. Ray Scott yanks the rug out from under wanna-be country artists that preen and pose their way to the CMT screen (*cough Bigandrich *cough) and who have alot of fancy clothes and groupies but nothing to say. It's also nice that his deep baritone voice is actually on the radio these days, making up for the fact that Trace Adkins, who used to sing like that, has basically become a hip-hop artist. "My Kind of Music" is the best country single of the year so far. "Dirty Shirt" takes a simple theme (working man as hero) and takes it someplace no artist has ever dared to go. "Fly With An Angel" is almost breathtaking in its message and effortlessness. And "Bear With Me Lord" takes a simple prayer, strips it of all the Brad Paisley hymn-singing drama, and actually says something to the 99% of us who can identify with the sinner within.

It will be very exciting to see Ray Scott blow everyone off the stage in the next few years while he works his way to superstar status, 'cause it's coming. In the grand tradition of Cash and Waylon, then Clint and Travis Tritt (who I am reminded of in a good way), he's on the rise, and this album is a plainly stated reason why. Simply put, there aren't any Nashville artists around like him anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD, February 18, 2006
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
Need a new ranking for this - like a 10!

I am not normally a big country music fan - just love music and if it is a country song then at that time, I love country music. I first heard "Different Kind of Cowboy" and fell in love with Scott's voice. Since then have bought the CD - love every song on it. And to the Rock'n Roll Cowboy who figured women would not like this - boy are you ever wrong - women will love this. The voice alone reminds us of times when honorable men were allowed to be men without the ropes of extreme political correctness tying them up. And it don't hurt that Scott has a great look to go along with the voice.

BUY IT! You will love it. Reminds me somewhat of story songs of the late Tennessee Ernie Ford
