2.0 out of 5 stars Huh?
I like a few of the songs, but...really? A record deal? I would not reccommend buying this unless you really know what you are doing. Not worth the money to buy it new. Maybe not even used. His songs are pretty good but the guy can't really sing. Ray, stick to songwriting. You will do well selling your songs to singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the days when country was proud to be country..., November 23, 2005
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
Lately, country music has taken a pop-leaning trend. I'm not saying this is wrong; I'm not here to comment on that. What I AM here to say is this: Ray Scott's MY KIND OF MUSIC takes you back to the days of Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, George Jones, David Allan Coe, and others who were proud to be country singers...and it's no coincidence that the afore-mentioned artists are mentioned repeatedly throughout this album.

This is a CD of small towns, of ordinary people, of broken hearts and burning desire. It's an album where an in-your-face anthem of individuality ("Plowboy") can stand alongside a sensual, Conway Twitty-esque ballad ("I Didn't Come Here to Talk"). It's an album about the passage of time and the perseverance of faith. It is a testament of nonconformity...a traditional country album that may just manage to attract non-country listeners, much in the way the Outlaw Movement of the 70's did. When something is this honest, you can't help but listen.

That's MY KIND OF MUSIC (and mine, too). Ray Scott is the shot in the arm that country music has been needing--his deep, rich baritone, combined with his superb songwriting skills (he wrote or cowrote every track here) and ear for a good lyric or lick, makes him stand out in the country music market. Will he be a superstar? If this was thirty years ago, then I'd say yes, without a doubt. Today, what with the drum machines and screaming electric guitars, it's hard to say. What I can tell you is this: MY KIND OF MUSIC is one of the few debut albums I've heard that not only promises, but FULFILLS it's promise. This is truly a country record, no matter how you look at it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Nashville debut since "Killin' Time", January 22, 2006
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
No joke. Ray Scott writes his own tunes and all of them are gems. No one has even attempted to write a song like "Different Kind of Cowboy", which should become an anthem for every country boy who isn't from Texas and gets tired of being told that if he doesn't have 300 head of cattle and a Dodge Dually then he's not really country. Ray Scott yanks the rug out from under wanna-be country artists that preen and pose their way to the CMT screen (*cough Bigandrich *cough) and who have alot of fancy clothes and groupies but nothing to say. It's also nice that his deep baritone voice is actually on the radio these days, making up for the fact that Trace Adkins, who used to sing like that, has basically become a hip-hop artist. "My Kind of Music" is the best country single of the year so far. "Dirty Shirt" takes a simple theme (working man as hero) and takes it someplace no artist has ever dared to go. "Fly With An Angel" is almost breathtaking in its message and effortlessness. And "Bear With Me Lord" takes a simple prayer, strips it of all the Brad Paisley hymn-singing drama, and actually says something to the 99% of us who can identify with the sinner within.

It will be very exciting to see Ray Scott blow everyone off the stage in the next few years while he works his way to superstar status, 'cause it's coming. In the grand tradition of Cash and Waylon, then Clint and Travis Tritt (who I am reminded of in a good way), he's on the rise, and this album is a plainly stated reason why. Simply put, there aren't any Nashville artists around like him anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD, February 18, 2006
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
Need a new ranking for this - like a 10!

I am not normally a big country music fan - just love music and if it is a country song then at that time, I love country music. I first heard "Different Kind of Cowboy" and fell in love with Scott's voice. Since then have bought the CD - love every song on it. And to the Rock'n Roll Cowboy who figured women would not like this - boy are you ever wrong - women will love this. The voice alone reminds us of times when honorable men were allowed to be men without the ropes of extreme political correctness tying them up. And it don't hurt that Scott has a great look to go along with the voice.

BUY IT! You will love it. Reminds me somewhat of story songs of the late Tennessee Ernie Ford

This CD was a surprise. We ordered it for the title track and found that all the songs on it are well worth listening to. If you like the title song, you'll like the whole CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars country still lives, March 21, 2006
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
This is top rate from start to finish - not a bad track on it! There's a blurred line between country and other music the last several years...but listen to this and there is no doubt which it is! Just awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars True, Blue Collar, Traditional Country Music At It's Best!, December 14, 2005
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
Ray Scott is the best newcomer in country music in the last 10 years. His style is very unique, singing in a deep voice that sounds a lot like a mix between Waylon, Hank Jr., and David Allan Coe. His music is best described as outlaw-traditional country with a touch of southern rock. You can really hear the influences of his Honky Tonk Heroes in his music. He writes all 13 songs on this CD, singing songs about the common man. And he shines on every single track. This isn't a typical Nashville album full of slow sappy love songs. These are mostly fast and upbeat songs with electric guitars and with quite a bit of steel guitar and a deep sounding southern drawl.

The title track " My Kind of Music" is by far the best song on the disc, a very traditional, fast, upbeat, country stomp recognizing the great singers of country music and how the girl he's dating can't get along with him for his great taste of music. This tune rings familar to guys like me that take girls out on a date and have never heard of Waylon Jennings.

Other gems are: "Different Kind of Cowboy" a song about not being the typical hollywood version of a cowboy, but a cowboy who's into riding motorcycles and being happy with who he is. "PlowBoy" is a southern rock sounding song about leaving for the country for the city to follow his dreams. "Gypsy" is a great song about the life of a traveling country singer that will send chills down your spine. "Walls" is another song that will get your blood pumping. Every song is excellent in it's own way, and it doesn't take long to love this album.

For blue collar guys like me, it's almost as Ray is consulting with us before writing these songs. They are all true, honest songs that ring true to the common man. I imagine not a lot of women can relate to these songs, but it's about time Nashville put out a guy like this. I hope he gets the recognizition he deserves. This guy is pure talent and this CD showcases it. This one is a gem, and hopefully we will hear more from this guy in the future. Best album to come out of Nashville in a long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars AHHH, How Nice to Hear, December 23, 2005
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
It is so nice to hear the old country style comeback. Ray Scott and Josh Turner have brought back the old style. Deep vocals, steel guitars, and a beat. Thank you to the both of you. If you like the old country music, buy this album from Ray and go check out Josh Turner also. Thanks again!!!

Listening to this CD will leave you wondering why we're not hearing a LOT more from Ray Scott. Not only does this singer have one of those great country voices, he writes the kind of lyrics that can only be inspired by someone who's really lived them. His music combines wit, talent and catchy tunes. I could listen to this over and over again. Here's hoping for more like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad song on here, January 11, 2006
This review is from: My Kind Of Music (Audio CD)
This CD truly is fun to listen to. I enjoyed this CD all the way through. Someone mentioned earlier about the similarity to Waylon Jennings and I think that is right on, when I listen to this CD that's who I think of. It doesn't sound too much like anyone else but that's the best comparison I can think of. You can really here the honesty in his songs and since he wrote or co-wrote all of them it makes sense. My favorite it 'Different Kind of Cowboy' since I am also from NC, and feel that song is about my and any of my friends. Great CD.
