Wicked romantic,
This review is from: My Lady's Guardian (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1475 England, due to the strange visions he always suffered, Gareth Beaumont saved the life of eight-year old Margery Welles when treachery left her in peril. However, her brothers never trusted a Beaumont, including Gareth, and he soon began a life of a mercenary exile. Now a dozen years later, Gareth awakens from sleep knowing that that Margery is back in trouble. Although he would prefer to pretend this was a dream, he knows the Beaumont curse has sent him a vision that he cannot ignore because of his oath to Lord Welles. He travels to Margery,s home where he learns the King has granted her permission to marry anyone she chooses. She asks her childhood friend to protect her from unsavory suitors by acting as her fiancé. However, soon love enters the picture even if he is not her equal. The third installment in Gayle Callen's exciting medieval romance trilogy, MY LADY'S GUARDIAN, is an entertaining story filled with action and tension. The story line moves rapidly forward due to the antics of the engaging lead couple. As with Ms. Callen's previous novels, THE DARKEST KNIGHT and A KNIGHT'S VOW, fans of the sub-genre will relish a tale that highlights the thrilling heart-thumping elements that make historical romances so enjoyable. My Lady's Guardian,
This review is from: My Lady's Guardian (Mass Market Paperback)
When Margery Welles was a child, Sir Gareth Beaumont saved her life. They had become friends but lost touch for several years. Now that Margery is grown, Gareth senses Margery is in danger once again. Margery's danger is of a different sort now. Since she is young and unmarried, she is sought by many noblemen for her beauty and her fortune. A terrible secret prevents Margery from marrying, but Gareth sees beyond the secret and recognizes Margery for the person she is. The pageantry and intrigue of the Middle Ages comes alive in Gayle Callen's 4 1/2 star final installment in this trilogy. It's a lovely way to tie all three books together, and Gareth and Margery are characters to remember

This is the 3rd book in the series. It all started with "the Darkest Knight" then there was "A Kinght's Vow" which are the heroine's two brothers stories. The heroine, Lady Margery has made appearances in the other two books so it was nice to read her story. It starts off as a flashback to when the heroine and hero were both children. The hero, Gareth is fostering at her fathers keep when it falls under attack. Gareth is asked by the Lord to keep Margery safe. He does but when its all over he is sent away from Margery by her older brothers. 12 years later, Gareth returns convinced that Margery is in danger and that he must protect her. Margery, now grown has been given a great privilege by the king. To choose her own husband. She is soon swamped by perspective bridegrooms and when Gareth comes to her aid she is comforted and happy to see her old friend. Gareth poses as onw of the would be prospects to insure her safety. Margery has a secret though that is tearing her apart and only Gareth can help her with it. Along the way they fall in love but both know it can neer be. This is a good enjoyable story that will make you want to read more of this authors work.

Very enjoyable medieval romance,

Gareth & Margery are engaging characters with both vices & virtues. Gareth's visions are a predictable fault for this sub-genre as is his hatred of her brothers, but Callen handles it well and makes him more than those cookie-cutter features would indicate. His nobility & honor intrigue. Margery manages to be both independent & needy, reckless & responsible. She's a strong character who makes a good match for this knight. The love story remains interesting, even though the lead characters are sometimes so stubborn you want to smack some sense into them. And the last 1/3 of the book, especially the ending is sweet & lovely & very romantic. There's no true villain in the piece; it's primarily a love story and needs nothing else to bolster it.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am now going to go out and get the first 2 in the series. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was it was a little predictable. But a great read. The author had some interesting twists with the plot...

I cried at the end of this brilliant book, and I NEVER cry! Ms. Callen's characters really came alive for me, and I read this beautifully written story in one sitting. This is the third book I've read of hers, and I'm never disappointed. I can't wait for her next book. She is a rising star in the medieval romance genre.

So much potential!,

This review is from: My Lady's Guardian (Mass Market Paperback)
Lady Margery has been given a rare opportunity by the king to choose her own husband. Unfortuneately, she's been hurt by her first love and was nolonger a virgin, and also, she had no attraction for any of the prancing peacocks that graced her castle. At about this time, a childhood friend emerged into the scene. This friend, Gareth, had been entrusted years ago to save Margery from a burning castle, and this was when he was just 13 yrs of age. After all these years, he still took her father's trust in him to protect her to heart, and when he saw in a vision (he has the gift of sight) that she was once again in trouble, he left has meager mercentary life to fullfill this mission.
The budding love story between Margery and Gareth had the potential to be ripe with sweetness. Where Gareth could have resisted and controlled his attraction to her for the sake of fulfilling his role as a defender. But instead, he was dripping with malice and resentment for the way her brothers sent him away. Margery was not spared from also being the target of this bitterness because somehow, an eight-year old GIRL was suppose to have any say in anything pertaining to who her fathers and elder brothers retained or dismissed from their army? First of all, why would the men confide these matters to their 8-yr old sisters? If she wanted Gareth to remain, it is well in the rights of the men to have the final say. So his anger toward her brothers being unloaded on her, tinging and staining his burgeoning relationship with her became repetitive and annoying. Gareth could have been portrayed as someone more noble, trying to be honorable in the face of all these injustices and oppression he endured. In the end, he discovered that Margery herself was, of course, innocent of his being sent away as a youth. And her acceptance of his psychic gift, poverty, and landlessness resolved much of his bitterness and made him a new man. It was a fun read, except what I mentioned above.

ENJOYABLE!,

This is the first book by this author I have read. It was most enjoyable. I loved Gareth and Margery. The story was a little predictable, but the fairy tale ending was still satisfying. I will read other books by this author.
