Book Description

May 20, 2005
The great amount of respect, love, and admiration author Norm Evans feels for his grandfather, Shep Lubbock, is evident in his memoirs, My Last Look at Texas. In this far-reaching autobiography anchored by both his Texas roots and his grandfather’s solid presence, Evans paints a vivid picture of the loving bond of friendship forged between him and the man who raised him at an early age. The unique life experiences that unfold show the everlasting influence of Shep’s guidance, teachings, and high standards. Through childhood adventures to wartime military service to love and marriage, Evans never lost sight of the importance of his Texas communities, his family, and especially his grandfather as sources of renewal, regeneration, and grounding. My Last Look at Texas shares these special memories of an independent, gratifying, and full life and the man who made it possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good autobiography that shows the importance of family, September 11, 2011
This review is from: My Last Look at Texas (Paperback)
I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review because of being part of the Dorrance Book Review Team. My minor in college is History and I have always loved reading real-life stories of the past. This book also drew my attention since it is about someone from Texas. It caught my attention right from the first chapter when the author says his grandfather was always "Papa" to him because my grandfather has always been "Papa" to me too. The book is an autobiography of the author's life, but in some ways it is also a biography of his grandfather since his grandfather had such an influence on his life. The author talks about how his grandfather was more of a father figure to him since he and his mom lived with his grandparents from the time he was two years old, and because he didn't meet his actual father until he was 10 years old. Throughout the book, as the author describes things that happened in his own life, he mentions things he learned from his grandfather and how supportive his grandfather was of everything he did in life. The author shares many short stories about his times as a student at Baylor University, adventures in WWII, other military experiences, family times, marriages and divorces, and other things that happened in his odyssey of life. Through all the ups and downs in his life, his grandfather was one constant that did not change and that helped him strive to live a great life.
