Book Description

Eight stories with a common theme---the wonder of finding love---sweep the reader into sensuous worlds where ordinary people discover, or rediscover, love. Foolish love, forbidden love, married love---even murderous love, each story is a seductive jewel populated with characters that seem like someone we could know---or someone we could be. Each of the stories in this collection is an exquisitely rendered portrait of people from a broad range of ages each proving that passion and love are eternal, regardless of life's far-ranging challenges.
  • My Last Romance - Back in the day Silvio Santini was the hottest dance band leader in the South and Ruby was the voice that drove the men wild. It's a lot of years later when Ruby chances upon a vintage copy of their biggest hit. Memories come flooding out and with them comes a stunning revelation.
  • Asa - When you are over eighty and have loved the same man all your life it doesn't do to dwell over-much on the measures you had to take to keep him yours.
  • Damian - She was an artist, he was a fisherman. Together they were magic, regardless of the cost.
  • Danse Avec Moi - She loves her sophisticated husband for his elegance and charm. Then he takes her back to his bayou home and teaches her how to dance.
  • The Haven - She never planned to fall in love with her husband's childhood hero. She could never have believed how loving him would alter all of their lives.
  • Waiting for Lindy - On a rainy, wind-swept Cape Cod night, a shopkeeper waits for his lover spending the time talking with his son about life, loss, and the mysteries of love.
  • Flynnie and Babe - Whenever Babe needed a shoulder to cry on Flynnie's was right there. It took her long enough to realize that Flynnie was right there, too.
  • Treat Yourself To The Best - Fifi just doesn't get it. She spent her entire life running away from home and now her adorable young husband just can't get enough of going back there.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

In My Last Romance and other passions Kathleen Valentine spins eight beautifully told little tales of lovers from a broad variety of lifestyles and ages. Her powers of description and sensitive portraits are captivating. Each story is sensuous, and romantic in the most traditional sense of the word. This is a literary feast for those with a taste for both the romantic and literature of high quality.

From the Back Cover

"Gorgeous! Very poignant. It is a wonderful thing to be able to immerse a reader in an entire era, a way of life, a culture in miniature - places, forms of music, habits of speech ... I felt transported, and that's something good fiction must do for me." - Peter Anastas, author of No Fortunes.

"Valentine's stories are as varied as the women of the world, and their great passions are never simple or uncomplicated. Her understanding of the human heart drives these stories, filled with nuance, pitch-perfect voice, surprise, and heartache. These are stories of women who have lived full lives, taking risks and living out the dictates of their passion." -Susan Oleksiw, author of A Murderous Innocence

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK! September 29, 2006
Format:Paperback
Kathleen Valentine's descriptions of her older characters' steamy sex lives reassure the reader that there IS life and love after 50!! In this entertaining book, passion as expressed by men and women who have lived full, interesting lives, is infused with a ripeness and wisdom that the younger set can't bring to bed. I've recommended this book to all my friends "of a certain age," both men and women. (Men, I've noticed, love the cover and immediately start thumbing through the book.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Passion, Poignance, and Place October 6, 2006
Format:Paperback
Every story in this book transport the reader to a richly imagined place and time. Kathleen Valentine writes eloquently and gracefully both of romance and of place. Her depictions of a part of the world I know well are so true, I trusted her descriptions of places I had never been. The passions of the title are lushly described without losing any poignance or elegance. I can't wait to read a full-length novel by this writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A literary banquet of characters, dialogue and place September 30, 2006
By Annie
Format:Paperback
Kathleen Valentine's writing takes you to a place that is rich in flavor and so real that you feel that you have known the characters forever. You can smell the breezes, hear the laughter and feel the tug of emotions that color each story. Each and every one is unique and complete and yet they all speak of the yearning to love and be loved that is as old as time. They reminded me of the fragility of the human heart, whether you are the one doing the loving or the one being loved. I did not want the stories to end as I came to care about each and every character. I have a feeling that I will be carrying their stories in my heart for some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book definitely gets an A+ grade! June 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read the stories in My Last Romance one after the other because I simply couldn't stop; the stories absolutely captivated me. The writing was simply lyrical and my only complaint is that they were all too short. Although each story was original and unique, they all shared having incredibly vivid and realistic imagery and characters that practically leaped out of the pages because the people had such complex and three-dimensional personalities. I positively loved this book and I highly recommend that anyone who wants to read touching love stories, should read this book ASAP.

Kathleen Valentine immerses you in exquisite language, lush settings, deeply drawn characters and a range of emotions in this gem of a collection of stories and character studies that you just won't want to end. Characters live and breathe across the pages (or e-page views) and draw you into their worlds and their lives.

I could swear that I felt, on my skin, rivulets of sweat in damp, humid settings, chills buffeting me in cold ocean breezes, and the warmth of body heat and soft bed covers as I was tucked into bed, in one story, and then transported to another totally different world in the next story. I DID NOT want this book to end!

I had previously come upon Kathleen Valentine's novel "The Old Mermaid's Tale", browsing through Amazon.com's e-book offerings. That book led me to this collection. I now intend to read her other books, while praying that she will write even more than the several novellas, found, but not yet read, on Amazon.com.

but I loved it. The stories are set in the most wonderful places and the characters are true to life. These are not teenage romances, but romances for grown-ups and they are lovely.

I look forward to more from this author.

Absolutely loved this book. Each story was so different but equally romantic. Kathleen does an amazing job of making her characters so unique and believable. As with all of her books I hated to see this book end.
