My Life Earvin "Magic" Johnson with William Novak: Random House Inc.
In Johnson's book, My Life, Earvin Johnson covers everything from his childhood to his NBA Championships to being diagnosed with HIV. Before reading this book I knew Earvin "Magic" Johnson strictly by his show name "Magic" Johnson. However, now that I have read his book I feel that I somewhat really know Earvin Johnson. It seems to me Magic Johnson is now more than Magic Johnson the NBA Superstar, I now know Magic Johnson, as Earvin Johnson, the good kid out of Lansing, Michigan who attended Michigan State University, is married to Cookie, and has now devoted his life to raising awareness of HIV and Aids disease. As I stated before, My Life covers Johnson's whole life . . . not just his job. This book can be read and enjoyed by anyone. However, basketball fans will enjoy it much, much more. Along with the talk about coaches, players, rivalries, the media, and everything else that comes along with being a NBA Superstar, Earvin Johnson also writes about his childhood, his family, schools, close friends, relationships, life after being diagnosed with HIV, and much more. This would be a complete autobiography about a great person even if he were not a hall-of-fame basketball player.? This book taught me a lot about the NBA and what goes on "behind the scenes". I learned a lot about the power that the media has. The media can make nothing into everything. For example, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were supposed to have a huge rivalry. Starting in college their rivalry was basketballšs main attraction. Everyone was talking about Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird. However, in reality, Earvin Johnson and Larry Bird had never really met in their lives. All they had done together was compete in a few basketball games. The media convinced the general public and, in some way Earvin Johnson and Larry Bird, that they did not like each other. Earvin Johnson wrote in his book that this was hard until he finally met Larry Bird. They talked for a few hours and found they had a lot in common. Earvin Johnson also wrote in his book about how the media has not only affected Magic Johnson but also Earvin Johnson. Most big decisions or events that went on in Earvinšs life were reported somewhere in the news. This was especially hard with personal issues such as marriage and HIV. This is what My Life is about, not only Magic Johnson but also Earvin Johnson.
