5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story of Inspiration!, February 4, 2007
Alison Lapper was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2003 Queen's New Years Honors List for her services to art. She was only 38 years old to be bestowed the honor and her story is one of inspiration because Alison was born with shortened legs and no hands. In fact, she is only 3 feet and 11 inches tall. I am one of the lucky ones to get this book because I picked it up at the Tate Modern Gallery in London, England. Alison's life was hard enough with disabilities but also inspirational because she chooses not to let her handicaps stop her from becoming a successful and inspirational foot and mouth artist, a mother, daughter, friend, and a national treasure. She writes candidly about her abusive marriage and the beauty of being a mother despite the possible danger to her and her son, Parys. The book is filled with pictures of her life and the moments including her MBE. We can all choose to feel sorry for ourselves but not Alison. She continues to be an inspiration for those of us who have arms. She uses her own body as inspiration and has created several art pieces. Alison dates men and lives a normal life as possible in Brighton, England. It's hard not to look and feel sorry for her but we shouldn't because it's who she is and she is incapable of being one of the great artists and art teachers of our time.
