I cried. I actually cried. When a book makes me laugh or cry or scream in frustration out loud, I know it is truly excellent. The description, physical and emotional, is so strong, it's like I'm right in the scenes. It revealed many things I never would have gussed. A must read for the skeptic, Christian (new or otherwise), or history or law and justice buff. Not a single...

3.0 out of 5 stars My real rating is three and a half stars
As a child of the Seventies I never prayed in school except before tests (thank you RR) so I never missed it. If I ever considered the school prayer ban in passing, it was to think of it as a result of the cultural upheaval of the Sixties. The gift of this book to me was to point out people make history by their actions. The school prayer ban didn't just occur, like an...

5.0 out of 5 stars Infamous Atheist's Son Tells His Story, August 31, 1999
By

This review is from: My Life Without God (Paperback)
Anyone dismissing Madalyn O'Hair as a kooky atheist who stretched her 15 minutes of fame as far as possible should read My Life Without God. Atheism may be what brought her celebrity status, but it was just one of her many perfidious pursuits. Written by her estranged son-disowned by his embrace of religion-Madalyn is shown to be at various times a drug-dealer, pornography patron, Communist rebel-rouser, and those are her good points!

As a young mother with two illegitimate sons, her hatred of America surpassed only by her jingoistic devotion to Communism, she sedulously tried to become a citizen of the Soviet Union. Her repeated in-person requests at the Soviet embassy in Washington grew so vexatious, the Russian staff eventually began pretending nobody there could speak English whenever they saw her. An unrestrained quixotic outrage at the discovery of Bible readings in her son's public school lead to her success in the Supreme Court's infamous decision outlawing any hint of religion in public education. The book details how, far more than her supposedly-principled cause, achieving fame was her true victory. Stroking her cyclopean ego is shown to be the motivation for nearly every move she made.

It is very interesting to note how her path crossed with those of so many other notorious figures in late twentieth century America. From her role as a colleague of Lee Harvey Oswald in a Communist organization, to her cozy cajoling of Fidel Castro's closest advisors to her friendship with Larry Flynt, Madalyn's circle of influence reads like a Who's Who of Masterful Miscreants.

The author's own story is one of overcoming nearly insurmountable obstacles. Bill married his pregnant, live-in girlfriend (Madalyn had invited her to move into their house) at 17, began active adultery and drug use shortly thereafter, and seemed headed to an early grave. With his second marriage floundering, and his life in a constant downward spiral, he turned to his mother's sworn enemy-religion, and finally found the salvation and peace that eluded Madalyn throughout her turbulent life.

The recent acknowledgement of her murder should bring newfound interest to this work, and it is a very good analysis not only of the workings of a twisted mind but also a strong demonstration of how so much went wrong with society over the past thirty years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Interesting, June 19, 2001
This review is from: My Life Without God: The Rest of the Story (Paperback)
Whether you are an atheist, a believer in God or a Christian you will find this book extremely interesting. Certainly every biography is written with a favorable slant toward the person who wrote it, but who can deny that a parent's actions directly affect the children they raise and live with!? Parents are role models and are given a huge responsibility to raise decent, loving and caring humans. Therefore, much of the blame must be on the parent/parents for what the child does later in life, even as an adult. This book completely amazed me because I had no idea how evil some people can be and it is actually hard to believe that all of that happened! I am truly thankful that William J. Murray finally found peace and a healthy way of living. It was incredible the way he let himself get sucked up in his mother's world again and again, especially since from the time he was a teenager he kept saying how he wanted to be far away from her and her groups. It is actually scary that there are people out there that are as mean and hateful and powerful as Madalyn Murray O'Hair... I hope and pray that this was exaggerated in the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but needs updating, April 2, 2004
This review is from: My Life Without God (Hardcover)
"Take it from someone who was there at the beginning, taking prayer out of school was one of the worst decisions that the U.S. has ever made."

That is the premise of this autobiographical book by William J. Murray, son of the infamous atheist Madelyn Murray O'Hair who successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to take prayer out of the public schools in 1963. If you don't know, William Murray at age 33 accepted Christ into his life. This is his harrowing and very sad story of growing up in a household with "evil personified", as he puts it in one part in his book.

This was a very interesting story. He goes into great detail about the "mommy dearest" relationship that he had with Madelyn and her love affair with socialist and communist causes and her outright hatred for Christianity. As sad and hopeless as the story constantly seems, it has a great ending. Now, an outspoken activist for Christian causes, William Murray has "exercised" his demons and now lives in the glory of Christ.

The only disappointing aspect of the book is that it was written in 1982. As most people know, the saga of Madelyn O'Hair had a very tragic ending. I would like for William to do an updated version of this book and include information regarding the subsequent murder of his mother, brother and his first daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful insider account of the true face of atheism, January 15, 2008

This review is from: My Life Without God (Paperback)
What is remarkable about this book is the insight it provides by someone who lived in the tyranny of atheism. This aspect of an insider account of an atheist is particularly valuable. This is especially important since such people are constantly hiding from the public all of the inconsistencies and sin in their lives which would discredit what they preach in public. She went to laws school but failed the bar. She never practiced law. She was one of those demonic personalities that proliferated in the 1950s & 1960s. Why did the 1950s & 1960s produce so many degenerates (e.g., Bill and Hillary Clinton, Larry Flynt, Abby Hoffman, Hugh Hefner, jim Jones, serial killers, Alan Dershowitz, Mayor Bloomberg)? Bill attempts to answer this question. It shows what motivates atheists and how they live. The fact it is the testimony of Madalyn Murray O'Hair's son makes it particularly trustworthy. She went to porno movies, she encouraged evil. She sold drugs. She wanted to drag everyone around her, even her family, down to hell with her. She cheated on her first husband, cheated other atheists and cheated children out of their inheritance. She was very egotistical. Everything she did inevitably served to stroke her ego. She had a false sense of grandeur since most people were appalled by her. She was hypocritical and involved in every sort of sin you can imagine. She was also a control freak. Bill's brother and daughter went to their death because of her. She hired a convicted murderer because she liked unrepentant degenerates around her. She was a devil. There's no question about it. However, the nature of her death may have been a blessing in disguise because it may have driven all three of them to cry out to Jesus before their death. As the old saying goes, when you're on your back you have no choice but to look up. Quite frankly, she acted like she was demon possessed. Bill Murray shows that his mother was not merely engaged in ideological argument about abstract concepts, but lived a debauched life. There was nothing pretty about her lifestyle. Her life was egotistical, selfish and hypocritical. What is strange is she not only perpetrated sin, but was adamant in encouraging sin. When her son became a Christian, she denounced him in the harshest terms and called it a postnatal abortion. She was pure evil.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than an atheist..., April 2, 2009

This book is much more than what I thought it would be. I was familiar with the name Madalyn Murray O'Hair and her conquest over school prayer and her attempts to sue astronauts for reading Bible verses in space, but I really had no idea who Madalyn Murray O'Hair was. Filled with hate for almost everything that came into her life from prayer to Democracy, she despised most everything with an overwhelming passion. A master at manipulation, she ruled with an uncaring heart, the lives of many that came into her sphere of influence. She was her own god, yet held séances and adorned her Christmas Tree with an angel.

Moreover, what is most disturbing is that so many supported her! Thousands of dollars went to her cause, could all atheists be as insufferable? I read this book in two days, unable to put it down. Grandiose at times, it still captured my attention.

The atheists in this book sometimes describe themselves as "humanists" but are so blind that they cannot (or refuse to see) the destruction they inflict on humans as a whole. If you are a Christian, you need to read this book to know the attitudes of those who oppose God. If you are an atheist, you need to read this book to know the kind of people that are leading you away from God.

Great Book I highly recommend it. William Murray gives insights about
his life with his mother Madalyn Murray who claimed to be an atheist,
but used that title for her own personal gains. Her disrespect for
what she insisted she stood for and disrespect for what others believed
led to her horrible demise.

I read this book in a couple days. I was curious how a man raised as an atheist could find Jesus. His life story was fasinating and his conversion quite amazing in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, April 2, 2004

This review is from: My Life Without God: The Rest of the Story (Paperback)
What an excellent book--- This book was written from the point of view by the author himself. What a life to live under such hatred and torment. How William Murray survived goes to show you there is a GOD in this world. The book tells about his past and how his mother ruled & direct and taught him to live a atheist life, until one day he found GOD thorugh a vision. It tells how William Murray went on to survive and become the chairman of Religious Freedom Coalition and to turn his life around and move forward in God's hands. Once you pick up this book you cannot put it down. I would highly recommend to anyone.
