MLP on DVD!,
By geatornez82 "Cartoon Connoisseur" (Germantown, MD United States) - See all my reviews

I am SOOO glad this came to DVD! I had to buy it the MINUTE it came out! It has all the episodes from the first season! The animation looks great. A heck of a lot better than on some of my tapes of MLP.
The only complaint I have is about the two "pilot" episodes, "Rescue at Midnight Castle" and "Escape from Catrina." These were originally television specials. In 1986, the Powers That Be edited them as episodes of the MLP TV series. The versions on the DVD are the edited TV show versions. But even with the edited specials, this DVD set is worth it.

Wonderful TV show, terrible DVD production,

I cannot begin to express my joy at finally having these episodes on DVD after all these years. If you never watched My Little Pony, it was a little more involved than you might have imagined with actual plots and adventures rather than just fluff. There are a few episodes that are oddly dark for a show about pretty ponies but there is nothing edgier than you would see on any show aimed at young girls. My joy at finally having these on DVD, however, is overshadowed by my frustration that they finally released Rescue from Midnight Castle (or Firefly's Adventure depending on your generation) and Escape from Catrina (the DVD incorrectly spells this Katrina) but edited them. What is the point of releasing them on DVD at all if you are only going to edit them! We now have to wait for them to either re-release these two specials on DVD unedited or hold onto our falling apart VHS copies. Beyond that frustration, the production values on the actual DVD's itself are terrible. The box has weird pictures of G2 ponies rather than a screenshot from the show and the actual DVD cases have their labels put on backwards. The entire set looks like something someone could have made in his or her basement. A few fans with a color printer could have done this up much classier and we would have known to put G1 ponies on it rather than G2. I suppose this is just the nature of the double edged sword that is cartoon shows on DVD. The people making them don't seem to get that people who watched the shows as children want the entire thing and will notice if its edited. Disappointing, but not enough that I didn't fork over my $50 to purchase this set and I will definitely be enjoying these episodes over and over in the recent weeks. ~Hillary is the author of the My Little Pony Collector's Inventory

Child of the 80's,
By Diana Harbour "Athena" (Midland, GA) - See all my reviews

I have always been a lover of My Little Pony and this series was one of the best for girls that was ever created. The characters are fun and loveable, the toys were fantastic, and the cartoons also taught valuable lessons to children. I was ecstatic to see that the first season had been released and after viewing it, it reminded me again about how wonderful this series was, compared to the disappointing shows that are on today. The lessons of sharing, inward beauty, and including others, were things that you could not a tell a child directly, but through cartoons, could be imprinted on their minds. The fact that Hasbro has reissued the My Little Pony toys (which are inexpensive) for the next generation adds even more appeal to this series. I give My Little Pony Five Stars because very few cartoon series have this much quality.

My Little Pony I love the 80s revisited,
By
This review is from: My Little Pony - The Complete First Season (DVD)
This 4 disc collection of season 1 My Little Pony episodes provides a great trip down memory lane for any child of the 80s but is also a great set for any new millenium child or pre-teen who enjoys ponies, horses, or the G3 (newer released) my little ponies.
The box set has art work from the G2 (or second release of the MLP- late 90s) ponies because Hasbro lost the rights to the original MLP (G1- or generation 1- the original MLP characters). Don't let this fool you, however. The 4 disc multi episode collection features the beloved pegasus winged ponies, unicorns, spike the dragon, the bushwollies, as well as megan and the other Earth ponies. The episodes have a more developed plot than the newer G3 (current movies) as well as ponies and vilians with more complex personalities and personas. Re-watching the episodes as an adult, it is fasanating to observe the many morales and complex issues that some of the ponies worked through. As a pediatric provider, this is a great highly recommended television viewing boxed set to own and love for the current generation of pony fans or an adult with a little girl's heart and mind trapped inside.

Great Set... Small Problem,
By Jon "Jon" (Haverhill, Ma) - See all my reviews

As another reviewer noted, the Specials are the edited versions (even more-so here, it seems; as they use the regular opening and ending themes). But have also come to find that "The Glass Princess" is also an edited version (the song-piece that was in Part 4 *isn't* there on the DVD).
Even so, it's still a nice set.

About Time,

This review is from: My Little Pony - The Complete First Season (DVD)
It's about time someone got around to putting out these wonderful cartoons. They are not as violence as the ones they have now, like powerrangers, nor do they condone violence. That's what I love most about MLP and the old Scooby Doo shows. Whoever says My Little Ponies is violent needs a serious reality check. I wish they would put more My Little Ponies on tape. Can't wait to show this to my neices and cousins. Not to mention I can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes. I'm a child of the 80's and love all those shows. Still watch them now that I am 30. Keep up the good work and thanks for putting out the DVDs.

Where's "The Good Ole Days"? And My Little Pony: The Movie?,
By
This review is from: My Little Pony - The Complete First Season (DVD)
Okay. Yes, blah blah blah! They made one at the very least. I checked it out before thinking of buying it as I would recommend if you are really, really into something such as my little ponies are mine.
And to be honest it was disapointing. 1. The Episode order was out of whack. 2. The My Little Pony: The Movie was not there. 3. The Escape From Catrina missed one singing number "What Happened To The Good Ole Days?" Personally for me, I want it to be accurate as it can be. And If I did buy this product, I would copy it and fix the order for myself. There were some jiggly screen moments. But I just sat back and excused it for 80's cartoons. Because there is a usual trait of 80's cartoons in having mistakes.

Wonderful! Worth it!!!!!!!!,
This review is from: My Little Pony - The Complete First Season (DVD)
This 4-disc DVD set is really woth buying. It Includes the pilot episode, "rescue at midnight castle" and a MLP special, "escape from Catrina" The picture quality is so-so, but it is quite old, almost 20 years, so...... This set is def. a treasure, and if you ever adored these ponies like I did, I would recommend it.

A variety of good & bad,

If you can overlook some of the lamer episodes and just focus on the more plot-hole oriented episodes, you should find it interesting.
Yes, one of the episodes is 'darker' in nature. Ponies are captured by dragons and turned into dragons by a centaur who keeps a throbbing 'dark' rainbow in a bag around his neck. Seeing the ponies in chains is sad, but not scary. My nieces & nephew (4, 6, & 8) LOVED this episode most of all and even began singing along with the seaponies halfway through the song! The rest of the episodes are all about friendship, helping one another, and saving the day. Sure, Crunch the Rockdog turned bushwoolies into stone, but they came back to life after he was cured of his stone-headedness. :D

VERY appropriate for children.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: My Little Pony - The Complete First Season (DVD)
I must confess that I have not seen the DVD, but I have watched the shows for several of the different MLP series.
I don't think this is too harsh for the children it is targeted to at all. Yes, there is evil in the series. It would make for a dull show if there was absolutely no conflict. In the "terrible for children" review it was mentioned that the shows were assumed to be about the ponies "styling their hair" and such. I'd just like to say that you must not think very highly of children's intelligence if you expect them to be content in putting on a DVD and watching two hours of hair styling. And there must be something seriously wrong if your child is frightened by every scene in a show that mainly focuses on pastel colored ponies and magic rainbows. |
