My sister went crazy over this hot air balloon pony toy. Twilight Sparkle is her favorite pony and she also loves telescopes, anything with horses and science.
The hot air balloon itself is well-made and didn't fall apart even after some rough handling to get the cardboard cut-out pf Rarity (which is EXTREMELY tightly strapped in with long plastic elastic 'ropes' and a hard bunch of cardboard folded together, it's VERY hard to get that part out without help and then still, it's difficult) out of the basket part.
There's 3 modes: try me, nightlight, and play. The play mode has a nice long pony song that's very pretty and a light show of different colors (ranging from red, purple-ish, and blue). The nightlight mode has a blue light mode, a red light mode, and off (stays on for a while, several minutes or so, with either color light on).
The try me is the mode on by default to try out in the stores to hear the sounds and see the lights. There is no complete 'off' mode or button for this toy, it's always on and ready.
Spike can be put on the top and the bottom too. The pony fits well in the basket and other ponies could too (I think two more could get in).
Overall, it's a great buy and somewhat functional as it being a super fun nightlight too. Your pony-loving kids (the adult 'kids' out there too) most likely will enjoy this toy. :)

I'm really splitting this review into two.
As a toy, this is great. It's cute to look at, durable, and has provided my daughter with a lot of imaginative play. Worth buying just for the play mode.
As a Night Light, it leaves a lot to be desired. When you press the button, it has an extremely loud chime. Maybe not so bad if you press it at the start of bed time, but really loud if you try to turn it on again as your child is drifting to sleep.
And you will have to press the button again, unless you are blessed with a child who falls asleep in seconds. The light does not stay on very long and I usually have to press it about three times before my daughter falls firmly asleep.
The colors are pretty though and the glow is lovely in a dark room.
So the four stars are really for the toy aspect - just don't count on it as a wonderful Night Light.

I am reviewing this product for collection and display purposes, and I have no idea how useful it is as a toy or night light. It is a very nice display piece, as the twilight's balloon is one of the most show-accurate playsets I've seen. Her balloon has been on the show several times and is in every theme song. The balloon I have (not purchased from amazon) has white swirls on the balloon part, making it more show accurate than what's in the picture. This set also includes the first wave release of twilight with bangs, which is getting harder and harder to find as they are being phased out by wave 3 releases. Having her assistant spike is a plus as he is difficult to find (I only know 2 other sets that contain spike), but be warned he is not show-accurate standing on all fours.
