Book Description

October 14, 2008 5 and upK and up
WILD ANIMALS DON’T SCARE Little Sister. And to show how much she likes them, she’s going to hug them all, from Ape to Zebra, whether they like it or not! A newt, an octopus, a porcupine . . . it’s a slimy, slippery, prickly situation. What will Little Sister hug next? And what kind of trouble will those hugs get her into?

With riotously revolting rhymes and hysterically funny art, kids will be laughing their way from A to Z . . . until all the animals are scared away and there’s only one person left to hug!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–The exuberant and omnivorous younger sibling from this team's My Little Sister Ate One Hare (Crown, 1996) is back. Hawkes's rounded, humorous paintings interpret Grossman's manic universe–this time one in which "ABC golly gee!/My sister's on/a hugging spree!" Letter by letter, the girl enthusiastically squeezes an amusing assortment of animals. While the premise is not so fresh the second time around, the book's humor will certainly appeal to children: "My little sister hugged a NEWT,/Who climbed in her mouth because it looked cute/And crawled so far down that you hardly could spot him./All you could see sticking out was his bottom." While adults may not embrace this book, young listeners surely will.–Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful romp!, February 7, 2005

(REAL NAME)
Sequel to My Little Sister Ate One Hare, this book follows the same basic format: rollicking, lively rhyme, fun illustrations, and ridiculous plot. It follows the once-omnivorous, now hug-iferous sister through hugging episodes with animals from a (ape) to z (zebra). The vivid, action-packed illustrations are a riot and would work well for both classroon read-aloud and read-alone sessions. My Little Sister Hugged an Ape is so much fun that even the most reluctant readers will be inspired to follow along with the adventure

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty & imaginative, September 22, 2005
This one is a 6 out of 5 in terms of creativity. I love the rollicking, rhyming verse punctuated by "My sister's on a hugging spree". And, the ending is 100% perfect. The illustrations are wonderfully funny and perfectly matching with the tone of the text.

The only downside and this is a minor personal preference is that it is a tiny bit gross in some of its humor with bugs crawling in noses, etc However, this hasn't stopped me from reading it.

Kudos to the author for his originality!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT CHILDRENS BOOK - FUNNY FOR KIDS AND PARENTS, March 13, 2006
We first borrowed this book from the library and we liked it so much that we rechecked it out. When we finally had to turn it in, we were both disappointed so I bought it here. It is such a good book. It is funny and the rhymes flow easily so it is a quick read too. It is one of my favorite bedtime stories to read to my daughter.
