Book Description

May 1, 2003
The dynamics of loving a Black man are often discussed by Black women. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health, Black women are less likely to marry or remarry, and more likely to have their marriages end in separation or divorce. Some attribute the woes of Black love to low income financial stressors, difference in educational attainment for Black women vs. Black men and even the lack of effort by all parties involved.

Lana Reid, a newcomer to the poetry scene announces her passion for Black men in her new book My Love Notes to a Black Man. A coffee table collection of forty poems with sensual but tasteful mixed media illustrations. Lana shares her up and downs and continuing devotion to her Black men through a fusion of poetry combined with light erotica.

Lana takes the reader on the journey that begins with the familiar hurdles of loving a Black man. She then moves on to uplifting reflections that give Black men comfort in her understanding of their personal battles while at the same time exposing them to a Black woman’s own personal struggles. She finishes off the book by discussing the soulful and sensual elements that a Black woman enjoys while loving a Black man.

About the Author

Born July 8, 1969 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina this newcomer to the poetry scene began writing at an early age. Laughing, she attributes her rebellion to structure, punctuation and her relaxed poetry style to the strict English teachers she had in her childhood years. She states, "In my mind, I chew on a thought for a while and by the time I sit down to write them down on paper, the result is for the most part the finished concept. I revise at times, but not much."

Growing up as the child of a military father afforded Lana the opportunity to live in countries such as Japan and Europe. The experience showed her the difference in treatment of Blacks by other cultures vs. the inequality they receive here in the United States. As a result, a large portion of Lana’s work focuses on issues in the Black community. Lana states, "That is the who and what that has shaped me as an artist. The extended families Blacks in the military make, the brothers "dissing" each other on the block, the pastors giving sermons on Sunday morning, the grandmother sitting on the porch giving little life lessons, and the double dutch sessions with cousins on summer afternoons." She says that she constantly keeps in mind where her people were yesterday, where they are today and where she would like for them to be going tomorrow.

When questioned as to why she writes under a pen name, Lana says, "There are times (a lot), when I’m quite shy and I just like to sit back and observe scenes and not be the center of attention. Also, there are some topics that I write about, especially the last chapter of my current book, that are very risque, you know the type of stuff you don’t want someone to mention while you’re walking down aisle five at the grocery store or during church service."

So where will you find Lana? She currently resides in Los Angeles, California with her daughter, Rottweiler and two cats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honoring black men., November 1, 2003

This review is from: My Love Notes to a Black Man (Paperback)
In this beautiful coffee table presentation, author Lana Reid beautifully, rhythmically, and respectfully declares her love for Black men. Not only is the cover a wonderful work of art demonstrating the strength of a black man as he reaches out and holds a black woman in the palm of his hands, the poems also succinctly uplift the black man. She talks of the hardships of loving them, the ease as well as conflict of understanding them, and finally, the beauty and intimacy that can result from loving them.

Simply put, MY LOVE NOTES TO A BLACK MAN is beautiful! Ms. Reid's prose, coupled with the appropriately disbursed charcoal drawings of black love, is breath-taking. This is a book that I'd proudly present to my husband and also showcase in full display for the world to see.

Lana's love notes were a pleasure for me to read. I was enlightened by them. The poems didn't focus on negativity, but instead they took me through the joys and pains (physical, mental and spiritual) of the black relationship from a woman's perspective. This book is enciteful, sensuous and very tastefully done. I highly recommend this literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving Prose For Our Men..., February 12, 2004
By
Reader (Montgomery, AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Love Notes to a Black Man (Paperback)
Ms. Reid is one poet that has moved me to tears with such thought provoking and beautiful words in support and in honesty of our black men.

This collection of love notes is a wonderful compilation of signature poetry that only someone with a clear understand and grasp of the English language could write. The author's command of our language made this a standout collection. She is able to deepen the reader's appreciation for conveying feelings and emotions. I am proud to have this be placed upon my coffee table, for everyone to read.

The author separates her love notes in to four sections: Painful Love Notes, Meditative Love Notes, Supportive Love Notes and Sensual Love Notes. Each section is filled with poetry that elicits the response to each of the sections. One poem in particular moved me to tears. Deep.

Every poem in this book is worth reading it and breathing it. That is how deep they are. That is how much they pull you in not with rhymes but a rhythm not all poets can understand or duplicate. However, I do have several favorites. They are: Trash Day, We Theorems, The Kings of My People, Reflections On a Look, Before, Lesson To a Dad, And I Watch, Porches, A Different Kind of "I Do", No Comparison, When a Brotha Makes Love to You, The Difference in My Sexual Mood and May I Kiss You.

This book is a must read for those who relish in poetry and love the feelings invoked from reading great poetry. It is a must read for all the brotha's out there. Ms. Reid makes an honest portrayal of black men and recognizes their faults and strengths and relishes in knowing she could not be without a black man. This is a wonderful and positive reflection of our black men. Recommended.
