Rockin' And Rolling!,

This review is from: My Lucky Day (MP3 Download)
A nice, smooth rocker from the Boss. The song feels like an old friend, familiar, yet also different. It reminded me a lot of Bobby Jean and No Surrender from Born In The USA. These are the types of songs that seem almost effortless from Springsteen. I think this bodes well for the new album coming in January! If you liked Born In The USA or some of the songs off of disc 3 & 4 of Tracks then you will like this.

Great to have the band back together,

There's no denying that this is an infectious track, although my initial thought is that the whole enterprise seems to have sort of a "tastes great, less filling" vibe -- I can't wait to blast it from my open car window, but lyrically there's not much THERE there.Still, the band sounds great and I love those Steve Van Zandt harmonies. It warrants four stars simply for its energy level, which is a welcome byproduct of the E Street Band actually recording together in the studio. (For "Magic" they flew in separately to record their parts, which were assembled later.) Based on this song and the title track, I predict this album may not have the gravitas of some past Springsteen efforts, but it will probably be a heck of a lot of fun to listen to.

Muscular, efferverscent pop from Springsteen,

This is a fantastic track. Don't let the other reviwers fool you -- Bruce has a long history of rich, guitar-driven pop songs, from "Two Hearts" to "Rendezvous" and "Girls in Their Summer Clothes." This song, with it's jacknife lead guitar line and frenzied, breathless rhythm, is a joyful explosion of a song, running over with energy and enthusiasm. There's a great build here -- we start with just drums, bass, piano, and acoustuc and electric guitar. As verses progress, we get two more electric guitars, a fun backing vocal from Steve, a organ line, and a peppy sax solo from Clarence. The biggest star of the tune is unsung bassist Garry Tallent, whose fluid, rippling baseline is a real highlight of the song -- check this song out with headphones on, and you'll be surprised. While it may not blow you away with it's deep menaing, "My Lucky Day" is a real winner of Springsteen single - upbeat and fun.

Bruce has been so boring lately if you ask me, but this is a little more interesting. Sounds like he's been absorbing some Jeff Tweedy/Wilco vibes.

I am generally not a huge Springsteen fan, but this song is beautiful. I listened to it almost by accident, but I am surely purchasing the nex disc.

You Can Tell This Was Written Quickly,

When I first heard this, I wondered if the excitement of 'pop' music had totally overtaken Mr. Springsteen. Yes, I realize he writes a lot of simple, and basic tunes, but to my ears, Bruce and the producers either decided ahead of time that he was going to be "playing it safe" with the new album, or he is losing his touch with creative songwriting. This song doesn't go anywhere...doesn't do anything for me, actually. It's about as deep as the paper I'm typing this on (oops..forgot...no paper here). At least the title track to the upcoming "Working On A Dream" record is better than this, so there's at least some hope for the new album. Springsteen himself admits these songs were written very quickly, which can be a good thing or a bad thing. Hopefully there will be songs with a lot more depth, but this particular track is a bit too 'poppy' in my opinion. I've only heard this a couple of times, and I'm already tired of it...not a great sign. But my fingers will remain crossed until I hear the rest when "Working On A Dream" comes out. Grade: C-

Uhh, sounds like all of his other songs, and to list it as the 2nd most DOWNLOADED song on this SITE !That is total propaganda for an Amazon exclusive, With only 4 reviews, and its supposedly the 2nd most downloaded song, makes me think that no one under 30 is buying songs here.... or this is a trumpted up exaggeration to sell Bruce on Amazon. Lets be more honest Amazon. But if you Love the Boss, this is more of the same. enjoy. |
