Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1981 album from the R&B vocalist. My Melody features the production of Philly Soul legend, Thom Bell. Bell returned Deniece to the popular Jazz Soul settings previously heard on her debut This Is Neicy and has been referred to by Deniece herself as one of her favorite albums. Featured tracks include the hit single, 'What Two Can Do', which secured a Top 20 R&B chart spot and 'Silly', which became a huge radio hit and a signature song for Deniece Williams and is still played constantly on Quiet Storm stations today. Big Break --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars "My Melody is....", August 7, 2000

a beautiful album, one that covers the territory of love so well. The big hit was "Silly," which was appreciated more a year after the album's release and got a lot of air play then. Because it was played alot, it ended up turning people away from how great a tune it is. It simply expresses how a woman in love is betrayed by her lover and Niecy says it all when she sings,"love, oh love, stop making a fool of me." Sometimes feelings just need to be simply said. And anybody who ever fell hard for someone can relate to "Silly," "You're All that Matters," and "It's Your Conscience." I love the optimism of "What Two Can Do." And the love and peace of mind expressed in "Sweet Surrender" could easily be addressing love in this world or beyond. To me this is one of Niecy's best albums, a great showcase for her vocal and songwriting talents.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is what it means to be a singer, July 16, 2004

Niecey did it again. She sparkled, she dazzled, and she manipulated her audience by commanding her sultry angelic voice to lure and entice the feelings and thoughts of her audience. This is one of my favorite albums that Ms. Williams ever created. Because it has two of my favorite songs: "Silly" and "strangers." Although most of the popular audience will find "silly" as the best song on the album, due to its popular play on old school radio, I do not. I thought that the song "strangers" was a brilliant and better masterpiece. And in my opinion one of Deniece Williams best songs. The introduction to "Strangers" begins with the high angelic soprano timbre that many of today's superstars like Beyonce, Ashanti, and even Alisha Keyes do not have. The music for the song speaks for itself. The strings of the violin, the beating of the drums, the musical notes of the guitars all contribute in creating a powerful musical masterpiece, yet it never overpowers Deniece's voice one bit. As she sings "Strangers" her voice joins the chorus of the orchestra yet it is never looses its strength or power. As she says goodbye to her lover for the last time in "strangers' you feel the closing stages of a lost love. Unlike the music acts of today with phonies such as Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Ashanti who rely on their physical charms and unfortunately and shamelessly called Divas. Ms. Williams is a true diva of music. Her grace, elegance, and flair formulate a true diva of R&B and soul. Thus, the album entrenches music, love, and superb lyrical composition and conveys the essence of true soul music.

Deniece Williams is a rarity in the musical industry. She is a true artist. No gimmicks, no games. This woman merely opens her mouth and sings with a multi octave range, the tonal quality of an angel and a huge ability to convey true emotion in every song. MY MELODY was her first album done with producer Thom Bell. She had done three previous solo albums and felt her music was starting to drift from the songs she wanted to sing. She could do any type of music to perfection but the message in a song and its purpose was of utmost importance to Niecy. Again, a true artist. And here with Thom Bell as producer and music writer on each track here Deniece herself wrote the lyrics themselves to each and every song. MY MELODY is just that, a heartfelt message from Niecy to her listeners. And the songs are impeccable. This is soul/r@b music at its best. Most tracks have a ballad tempo which sets a beautiful theme to perfectly match her musical gifts.

The title track is truly sublime. IT'S YOUR CONSCIENCE, SWEET SURRENDER and WHAT TWO CAN DO are lovely tracks where Niecy soars over each note flawlessly. Then we get the true standouts - SILLY, a quiet heartfelt ballad of pain and hurt in a relationship where Niecy uses raw emotion with her angelic voice to leave the listener breathless. And STRANGERS is a huge haunting ballad where her multi ocatave voice goes to levels even she has never gone before. It is truly mezmerizing. From beginning to end this cd shows a rare musical talent in her prime with the best music to showcase her God given talent. It does make a r@b purist sad that music today does not have many artists who merely sing from the heart like this without overproduction. And BBR gives this album the royal treatment. The remastering is crystal clear. You will hear each ping of the violin and each sigh in her voice. Every inch of this production is remastered beautifully. There are two bonus tracks and in depth liner notes that include a lengthy interview with Niecy herself. This cd is a must have for any musical collection and I highly recommend it. A voice that must be heard.
