Kindergarten-Grade 3?Sensitive, soft but bright illustrations in pencil over watercolor depict Mexican scenes in 16 double-page spreads. Printed over the backgrounds are 18 poems in both English and Spanish (no translator is credited, so presumably Johnston, who lived in Mexico for 15 years, wrote both versions). The poems are mostly free verse, although there is some use of rhyme. They deal with everyday subjects such as cockroaches or corn, or historical topics such as the Nahuatl language or the disappearance of the Aztecs. Johnston is not at her best in these poems, which are a trifle pedestrian. The illustrations have charm, although several of the contemporary settings are unrealistically tidy or depicted in a sanitized manner. Margo Griego's Tortillitas para Mama (Holt, 1981) presents 13 traditional rhymes and their English translations with appealing paintings of Mexican life.?Pam Gosner, Maplewood Memorial Library,

The book My Mexico - Mio Mexico is an interesting collection of poems about life in Mexico that reaches a broad spectrum of younger readers. As a middle school teacher of Spanish, these poems are excellent examples of the differing views of Mexico - from the lament for the Aztecs in "Donde Estan?" to the poem "Soy Cucuracha" which is humorous and sure to make your students think and laugh! I would highly recommend this book to any Spanish or ESL teacher who desires to integrate culture and poetry into his or her lessons! My students have thoroughly enjoyed the poems we have studied from this book! Bravo y bien hecho!

I'm trying to teach my niece to learn to read in Spanish. She speaks it, but because she's been raised and educated in English, she hasn't had the opportunity to learn to read and write in Spanish. This book is a GREAT tool because the poems are both in English and Spanish, and they're also simple. It's also beautifully illustrated.

I love the cultural aspect because it is important for Latino children to read books to which they can relate.

I love this book. The colors are rich. The poetry is wonderful. The fact that it is written in both English and Spanish. How cool is that?
