Steve Wynn Proves A Good Wine Gets Better As It Gets Older,
By Ripped off by Amazon "Ripped off by Amazon Again" (Scarsdale, ny USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Midnight (Audio CD)
I have been following Steve's career since the 1982 release of the classic Dream Syndicate work, "The Days Of Wine and Roses." There is no coincidence that 1982 was one of Bordeux' finest vintages. Steve's solo career, which began in 1990 with "Kerosene Man," is illustrative of the fact that great artists, even outside the mainstream, can continue to create brilliant work when their hearts and minds are in the right place. John Agnello, who also produced "Sweetness and Light," pushed all the right buttons, moved all the right switches, and added great insight, skill, and support to this work. I hope John and Steve work together into the future. The songs here "kick the poop out of you," in the words of Mr. T. "Nothing but the Shell," "Favorite Game," and "500 Girl Mornings" are classic Steve Wynn: Guitar infestation coupled with the lyrical genius that really gets your mind grooving. Linda Pitmon's wild woman drumming along with Chris Brokaw's killer guitar work (Chris also works with Come) fully complement Steve's V.U. influenced guitar and vocals. BUY THIS CD!!!!

Never as good as playing alive,

This one could be one of my favorites of Steve's solo albums. Most are good songs, and a couple are great. Even "nothing but the Shell" could be a hit. At the stage, Steve Wynn use all his honesty and humility to brought an intense show. He plays the best songs of each album so the show is great, and he ended it with some of their early albums songs: When you smile, Halloween, Merritville, etc. If you ever like this man, and it's playing near your city, go to see him.

Steve Wynn's 6th studio album "My Midnight", came out in 1999 and left us as soon as it came out. On this the Northern California kid, by the way of Southern California and who moved to New York City in 1994. This album had many flavors. Steve brought in Chris Brokaw from the band Come on lead guitar, Tom Maimone on bass guitar, Joe McGinty back from "Sweetness And Light" on keyboards and acordian and girlfriend (now wife) Linda Pitmon on drums and she sang backup vocals on several tunes. John Agnello again produced this fine album, with Steve. The album opens with "Nothing But The Shell", a solid rock-pop masterstroke, this song was used in the movie "Stir Of Echoe's", should of been a hit. "My Favorite Game", is a great tune, the soul sounding backbeat (think early 70's), with Steve and Linda on vocals, great guitar by Chris. The playful "Cats And Dogs", a very 60ish sounding tune that would of fit perfectly on AM radio back in the day. "In Your Prime", those strings are so good here, an excellent pop-rocker. For a pop-psych experment try "Mandy Breakdown", the swirling guitars and strings make for a wild ride. "Don't Do This, Don't Do That", a very schizophrenic pop tune "Lay Of The Land", pretty piano by Joe McGinty. "Out Of This World", a rocker with Chris' guitar, Steve's vocals are top notch, I really think Steve and Linda should do an album together, there vocals compliment each other and are so good on this album, the tenor sax by Philip Johnston is also good. The title track is a beautiful piece, McGinty's organ is just great, as solid as Steve Wynn can get. "The Mask Of Shame", a true chanty, McGinty's acordian is so bright, nice lyrics by Steve, Chris' guitar is great also. "We've Been Hanging Out", with those soul strings (reminds me of the O'Jays or The Temptations), this is a great tune with Steve and Linda trading vocals. The freakbeat of "500 Girl Mornings", a tremendous tune by Steve, great lyrics, McGinty's organ is solid, as is Linda's drumming and Tony's bass. This was a great follow up to "Sweetness And Light". Next Steve would give us his Miracle album, that has lasted almost a decade now.

Steve Wynn one of today's best talents.,

This album came out in 1999,went nowhere, i wonder why.Because radio and TV have no imagination and no BALLS! This album to me sounds like Steve was trying for a 60's type sound but i could be wrong. (I've known to be wrong many times.) About the songs, "Nothing but the shell" could have been a hit. Steve and Linda Pitmon do a great duet on "We've been hanging out". They should do a duet album someday. Again one of today's best talents is being overlooked because of the crap the people get forced feed. But then again i like it this way because when somebody ask who that is i can tell them and show them his vast collection of work. Keep on rockin' Steve. |
