As a parent of a child with autism I give In My Mind a big thumbs up. This book takes a look at autistic behaviors like self talk, hand flapping, stimming and shows how what you might see looking at a child with autism may indeed be something completely different and quite beautiful. A great book to teach about autism, destigmatize it and promote positive autism awareness. The illustrations are so vivid and innocent. I've shared this book with my children and other adults too!

This book only focuses on behaviors that "normal" people would consider bizarre, and tries to explain them so they won't think the autistic child is so stange. That's not what I would choose to tell people about my own child, so this is not a book I would recommend to people, to explain what my child is like. At least, for me, I don't see my son as someone who's always playing alone and talking to himself. He may choose to do that sometimes, but sometimes not. I don't think this book really describes the "whole person," and doesn't show how 2 people with autism can be different from each other. (Because, honestly, seeing a rainbow of lights shooting around the sky is something I have never heard of, but this book makes it sound like every autistic child is staring off into space seeing rainbows of shooting lights.) The book is just a little too short and simple, I guess.
