My Mommy, My Teacher
Although this book is sweet simply for the wondrous illustrations Johannah Bluedorn has created, there is a depth to this story that homeschoolers worldwide will enjoy and deeply treasure. As a homeschooled child herself, Johannah has captured the very essence of life in a homeschooling family - she has captured the bond of love, trust and joy found between loving parents and their children. I believe Johannah has given us a unique glimpse into her own childhood memories that were the inspiration and basis for this treasured story. Patience, understanding, gentle discipline, engaging instruction, joyous obedience and more are to be found in the children's characters as they move through typical homeschooling days and seasons of the year. Although the full color page illustrations are heartwarming and thoroughly enjoyable - it is the children's hearts and actions and the parents unwavering love and guidance that have truly captured my attention and drawn me to this book. This is a must for every homeschooling home - not only for the children to enjoy and learn from, but for the parents and most especially the homeschooling mother to refer to for encouragement and hope! Seen through the eyes of a little homeschooled girl, as parents we are given a unique gift through this book - we can begin to understand what our children see in day to day life. What our children's joys and pleasures are, how they perceive learning and education, the simple basic trust and reliance they place in the God of their parents, how family interaction is so vital to the well being and happiness of childhood - and how time with mother and father is the ultimate foundation the child builds on for life. If you have ever had a rough homeschooling day, if you are ever discouraged and ready to cry - take out this simple little book and allow the story and illustrations to wash your heart clean, build up a new vision for why you are doing what you do, and open your heart to your children once more... This little story shares how loving, training and teaching your children is a priceless gift from God...

Promoting the Joys of Homeschooling,
This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
My Mommy, My Teacher is a high quality hard cover with beautiful illustrations and a warm, engaging story line that promotes the joys of home schooling.
I just read it to my daughters last night and we all enjoyed it so much. My 13 year old son who was listening said, "We should home school like that!" There are several things that appealed to him: 1. The farm (chickens and strawberries!!) 2. The parrot 3. The cozy read alouds, and 4. The love and joy! I have learned so much from reading Teaching the Trivium; and My Mommy, My Teacher has put it into simple terms for me. I have always read aloud to my children, but had fallen out of read alouds during the school day thinking we had too many other important things to do. Both books have helped me to see that this is one very important thing that we need to get back into during our school day and not just at bedtime. I am looking forward to those cozy moments with the kids drawing, cutting, and sewing while I read those memory building books! I was thinking that if you were new to homeschooling and weren't sure of how to set up a schedule or what to do, this book would give you lots of ideas. (I am a veteran and it gave me some new and good ideas!) The paper in this book is very thick and sturdy. It will survive many read alouds. Your children will enjoy paging through it and gazing at the beautiful detailed, full color illustrations on each page. Truly, Britta [...]

Lovely book!,
By
This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
Yesterday I sat down and read this book to my children who are aged, 4, 6, and 7. They absolutely loved it! As I read the story of a day in the life of a homeschooling family, I kept hearing a chorus of "We do that, too!" from my kids. We read a lot of older books to our children, and while the morals and language of those stories are just what we like, they do, almost without exception, show the children going to school. How lovely to have a story about a family whose lifestyle mirrors our own! The children loved the detail in the illustrations and spent a long time looking at them. As soon as I was finished, they asked if I could read it again. The only reservation some parents might have is that the book mentions that the family is reading The Hobbit. Families who avoid fantasy-type books might find that objectionable. Otherwise, I think it is a wonderful addition to any homeschooling family's library.

Simply Delightful!,
This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
There are plenty of books out there written by homeschoolers, and for homeschoolers. But we are hard pressed to find books written specifically for homeschooled children about homeschool families. This book called "My Mommy, My Teacher" is written and illustrated by Johannah Bluedorn (who was herself homeschooled) for children. Specifically homeschooled children!
I was really delighted by this book full of sweet and gentle words telling of a homeschool family. The family consists of father, mother, three brothers and two sisters. The story is written as though the 7 year old girl in this family is telling it. My son was very intrigued to hear of a homeschool family in a book! This was new to him, as I said we are hard pressed to find children's story books in which the children in the book are homeschooled. And it's not enough that the story is really engaging, Miss Bluedorns illustrations are gorgeous. I was very pleasantly surprised by the beautiful, soft and detailed pictures in this book. We read the book, but had to go back through a second time JUST to absorb the pictures as they, themselves tell a story. Each of Miss Bluedorns paintings are so full of details that it took us longer to marvel over the illustrations (and oooh and ahh!) than it did to read the book. They really are that interesting! I think every homeschooled child should be entitled a chance to have this book on their personal book case. We couldn't help but smile as the little girl in the story told of the titles of the read alouds that the family in the book was currently reading, and how they use a timeline. This story is so true to life in the day of a homeschool family, that your child will not help but to feel a special fondness and connection to this book. I highly recommend it as a high quality children's book with top notch illustrations. Enjoy!

Mommy, this book is about you!,

This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
I was delighted when I received My Mommy, My Teacher by Johannah Bluedorn - so was my daughter and she immediately claimed it as her own. The title grabbed her attention right away. "Mommy, this book is about you. You are my mommy and my teacher!" She quickly turned to the first page which is written with a child-friendly font and my little reluctant reader began reading. Holly and I also enjoyed admiring Johannah's artwork. Each page is filled with pictures, beautifully drawn in intricate detail, of a homeschool family as they go through a typical day. This is an amazing book, not just for homeschoolers, but for all families. For no matter where your children go to school, mommies are always teachers.

With all the children's books out there, I'm glad there's one that extols the virtues of family living.
My Mommy, My Teacher by Johannah Bluedorn tells about a typical day in the life of the author from a child's perspective. Her day starts out with family prayer around the breakfast table and ends with family Biblical discussion. All throughout the day she's interacting with her family and learning about life, love and service from her mother's example of tender loving care over her family. All throughout this book are lovely pictures illustrating the storyline. Johannah Bluedorn is a self-taught artist. Her discipline and work ethic show through every turn and line. It was in this setting that her skills were honed. Praise God for homes like these! Although this story is called My Mommy, My Teacher, the main focus of the story is family togetherness. It's so refreshing to read about a stable, God-honoring family enjoying each other and giving glory to God throughout the day. When I first read this book I couldn't understand why Miss Bluedorn picked the title she did. Then I looked again and realized that while Mommy doesn't formally teach until the middle she's teaching throughout the whole book! From her gracious poise to her dutiful preparations, this Mama is teaching with her life! Her daughters and sons have a well laid out example of a Christian woman, wife and mother. Now that I have a better understanding of the book, I can highly recommend it without second thoughts. This book will be a blessed addition to everyone's library. my-natural-motherhood-journey.com

A Vision for Our Children,
By Jennifer Bogart "@ Quiverfullfamily.com" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
I purchased this book for my oldest daughter when she was 3, as preparation for our families homeschooling. At the time she didn't know many families who homeschooled (my mother does homeschool my youngest brother) - but it seemed that everywhere we turned people were asking us about playschool, preschool, school - already at the age of 3. She had also been exposed to some television and children's cartoon movies that portray the children in school situations (Franklin for example) - but we were lacking a positive vision in her for homeschooling.
This is where My Mommy, My Teacher came in. A truly beautiful book, with soft illustrations, and a rhythmic productive, rural life (we also live on a farm with livestock, and a Daddy at home) blending beautifully with the home education of children. For myself, it was like seeing Teaching the Trivium beautifully narrated and put into practice in one family's life. For my daughter it was affirming that we are not the only family where the mommy is the teacher. She had started asking to go to school when she was older, and we definitely DID NOT have that leading from the Lord. We are now blessed to be in fellowship with other homeschooling families so that she can see that we are not the only ones, and when people ask her if she will soon be in school, or if she is in school, she proudly replies - 'No, I go to homeschool' - she is now 4.5. The only reason that I gave 4 stars instead of 5, is that some of the books that the family was reading together are not going to be included in our own families reading (we are non-resistant, and do not believe that violence towards others is pleasing to the Lord, and are very careful in selecting titles including violence/revenge etc.), as the Lord has led us to avoid certain subjects alltogether, and we were saved out of the occult (we will not be reading the Hobbit). However, we do recognize that the Lord leads us all differently. Thanks to the Bluedorn family for their vision of Christian homeschooling, and for providing a positive vision both for us, and for our children.

We Love This Book!,

This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
This delightful book will bring a smile to your daughter's face. Written from the perspective of a little 7-year-old girl who is in a Classical homeschooling family, she shares in simple terms how they live their everyday lives. My littel daughter, Kathrynne, and I have enjoyed reading it together many times. Even though it is a children's book, I found it very enjoyable and motivational to hear how this Christian family lives, works, prays, plays, and stays together. In an age when wholesome children's reading material is very hard to find, My Mommy, My Teacher stands apart. I highly recommend this for anyone with young daughters.

A Family Favorite,

This review is from: My mommy, my teacher (Hardcover)
My children love looking at the wonderful illustrations in Johannah Bluedorn's book, "My Mommy, My Teacher". The vivid colors and rich detail on every page are simply stunning! I chose this as the first of Johanna Bluedorn's books to purchase for our family because of the title. We are homeschooling our children, and though they are only preschool age, many of their young friends attend a school outside the home. My daughter was wondering why she didn't "go to school" and if she was missing something exciting. After introducing her to this book, she only wonders when we will get to do all of the different things in the story! Hardly a day goes by without at least one request to hear the "Mommy Teacher" story. Read it - you won't be disappointed.
