Book Description

February 28, 2008
As we march on through another year of war, many service members have already completed more than one deployment. Astonishingly, a lot of these service members are mothers, and they are not only balancing their commitments to their families but to the nation as well.My Mommy Wears Combat Boots is based the personal experience of a soldier and a mother who was seeking a way to explain why she needed to leave her child again and go to war. Young children are very limited when it comes to communication skills, and often have a difficult time expressing guilt, frustration, anger, loneliness and sadness and often don't realize that it's normal to feel all of this and more as the result of their mom's deployment. Books about mommies going to war are few and far between, and My Mommy Wears Combat Boots is for mothers in uniform everywhere that are seeking a way to explain to their children the emotions associated with deployment and a way to positively channel those emotions when they are away.

About the Author

Sharon G. McBride is an U.S. Army veteran of 13 years, and has completed three deployments since 2003. As a photojournalist, the author documented events of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Hurricane Katrina. As the single parent of a three-year-old toddler, she wrote My Mommy Wears Combat Boots based on her personal experience in addressing her child's negative feelings associated with her deployments. The author is out of the service now, but she hopes that My Mommy Wears Combat Boots will help other military children cope with their separation from their mothers as the result of this war; because there are a lot of mommies who wear combat boots.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great educational and inspirational book, March 25, 2009
This review is from: My Mommy Wears Combat Boots (Paperback)
My little girl was having a lot of emotional problems as the result of my third deployment. I bought this book because it helped me and her to recognize her feelings, both the good and the bad. When a parent deploys, kids may experience a whole range of emotions, from pride to saddness to anger. There are a lot of these type of books on the market, but this one goes straight to the heart by not sugar coating the emotions children go through and gives children ideas and ways to positively channel ALL their emotions. By reading this book with a character in similar situation, my little girl was able to positively deal with her own feelings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational and Charming, July 22, 2008
This review is from: My Mommy Wears Combat Boots (Paperback)
Sharon McBride's "My Mommy Wears Combat Boots" is not only an invaluable educational tool for parents who happen to be soldiers, but a delightful learning experience for their children as well. With many thousands of female soldiers having served in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is certainly an appropriate time for the release of this book. Due to the lack of similar books on this subject, I'm sure it will quickly become a welcome resource for parents and families of deploying mothers.

"My Mommy Wears Combat Boots" is an insightful explanation of why Mommy has to sometimes go off to war, and the resulting emotional conflict it can create for her children, or in this case, a little girl bear cub. It is written on an emotional level that children will readily understand, and runs the gamut of the typical feelings that a child would experience during separation. Ms. McBride addresses the appropriate emotions, and although she reinforces that these feelings are normal, bad behavior in response to them, is not.

It is evident to the reader that Ms. McBride draws on personal experience with her own child as she breaks down each emotional difficulty individually, and then summarizes them at the end.

The illustrations of the Momma bear and her cub are colorful and captivating. The depictions follow the story perfectly allowing the child to follow along and watch the story unfold as they listen to it being be read.

I highly recommend this charming and educational children's book to anyone (whether it be the mother, father, or extended family member of a deploying soldier) faced with the difficult task of explaining to the little ones why mommy has to go to war.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for families, May 20, 2008
This review is from: My Mommy Wears Combat Boots (Paperback)
This great little book appropriately conveys the emotions and behaviors of the young children who find themselves in the care of others when their mothers deploy. The tone of the book is soothing and uses words that are easily understood by young children. There are a lot of children's books on the market explaining what it means for a daddy to be deployed, but books explaining why mommies deploy have been limited. And many of those on the market gloss over the emotions that children feel. When operations started in Iraq, a generation of U.S. women became involved as never before; more than 155,000 women have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among their ranks are more than 16,000 single mothers, according to the Pentagon, a number that military experts say is unprecedented. This is a great addition to anyone's list of resources as a way to explain deployments to young children.
