Book Description

September 1, 2001
One person’s car pool is another person’s pilgrimage

In My Monastery Is a Minivan, Denise Roy offers thirty-five entertaining and touching stories that show how family moments can bring the greatest spiritual rewards. We find everything we need for spiritual growth as we picnic with the children, go to the grocery store, and pick up the morning paper. Denise’s intimate approach invites us to recognize the grace that exists within our own lives. We needn’t pull over and look for enlightenment; the divine is always present, even in the car-pool lane.

Stories of finding wisdom in the everyday

God is in the silence and also in the noise. Spirit is in stillness and also in silliness. The Sacred is in the monastery and also in the minivan.

“I don’t know how it is that days filled with children and noise and mess and clutter can seem endless, and then, when the kids are grown, it can seem as if those same days passed ever too quickly. I don’t know how many billions of stars are up in the sky or how suffering can hold the seeds of resurrection. I don’t know how to answer all my children’s questions, or my own. I don’t know how to completely let go.
Life keeps inviting me to learn these things, presenting me each and every day with opportunities for growth. And it does seem that when I open my eyes and heart to others, I begin to recognize something that has been there all along. It feels like a presence, a light, a love that is unbounded by time or space or matter. It moves within us and among us, healing us, filling us, calling us to recognize that what we seek is right here in our midst.”
—From My Monastery Is a Minivan

“I was thrilled to discover a soul sister in Denise Roy.  This book will be a wonderful companion to any parent, whatever their faith tradition.”
—Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer, author, Parenting as a Spiritual Journey

“This is the kind of book that makes you want to grab all your friends and say, ‘You’ve got to read this!’ This collection of inspirational stories will lift your spirits and soothe your soul. Denise Roy’s minivan wisdom invites you to discover the sacred right smack in the middle of ordinary life.”
—Steve and Patt Saso, authors, 10 Best Gifts for Your Teen

“The humor and honesty of Denise Roy’s writing pulled me in right away. If you are not a saint but an ordinary man or woman hoping to live the joys and trials of daily life with your eyes and your heart wide open to the sacred, this is a book for you.”
—Oriah Mountain Dreamer, author, The Invitation and The Dance
“Some people can hold up a lens to life that reveals the depth and beauty all around us. Denise Roy is that kind of person, and spending time reading the stories that fill her book is like spending time with a wise friend who brightens your life.”
—Tom McGrath, family-life editor, U.S. Catholic, author, Raising Faith-Filled Kids

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As a young woman, Denise Roy seriously considered a cloistered religious life, but ultimately decided to forego the nun's habit in favor of the crazy but joyful world of marriage and motherhood. Now a psychotherapist and mother of four, Roy shares spiritual tips in My Monastery Is a Minivan: 35 Stories from a Real Life, from Loyola Press. "Most of this book was written either in the middle of the night in my bathroom or in the middle of the day in our living room, where toys and soccer bags and an occasional kid surrounded me," she notes. Roy says that it's one thing to think and pray about forgiveness; it's quite another matter to put it into daily practice as a parent. These personal anecdotes are humorous and heartfelt; many parents will applaud her wise decision to find spiritual wisdom in the quotidian realities of washing dishes and tripping over Legos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughter is a Parent's Best Medicine, May 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: My Monastery Is a Minivan: Where the Daily Is Divine and the Routine Becomes Prayer (Paperback)
I was fed up and frazzled with being "just a stay at home Mom" when My Monastery is a Minivan was recommended to me. I was angered and frustrated believing that the co-op preschool demands, a constantly messy house, and the needs of my boys kept me from delving deep into a connection with the Divine. Within the first pages of reading this life-altering book I cried, first slow tears then they just wouldn't stop -- of course I was in public. I didn't care. I snorted, laughed, and cried until finally crusty layers fell from my heart.

My spirituality is earth-based and the cornerstone of my writing. But I was blocked to my connection to Mother Earth and God because I had failed to find the connection with my two greatest gifts from Spirit - my children. Parenting books usually make me feel further isolated because they hold up such a vision of perfection. This book made me feel good enough and then some. The 35 examples illustrated how to see Divinity in raising children, with laughter, reverence, and appreciation. Now I laugh more, enjoy more and smile more. My faith and trust has been restored. My boys have blossomed with my regained appreciation of our time together. And though I still get bored from time to time, I am not so dramatic about it. Recommend this book to parents of all religions, creeds, and cultures. It is a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!, June 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: My Monastery Is a Minivan: Where the Daily Is Divine and the Routine Becomes Prayer (Paperback)
I bought this book because I saw a notice that it had been awarded First Place as Family Life Book of the Year by the Catholic Press Association. I loved reading it -- and I recommend it to people of all religious traditions. The stories will make you laugh and cry, and they'll help you "find God in ALL things." As I read it, I came to realize that what I do as a parent really matters. Even my children like this book -- because it made their mom slow down and have more fun with them!

5.0 out of 5 stars funny & wonderfully inspiring, July 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: My Monastery Is a Minivan: Where the Daily Is Divine and the Routine Becomes Prayer (Paperback)
Reading this book changed my way of seeing the world. It made me laugh out loud, cry with sadness, and open up more to live my life with deeper compassion. In her acknowledgments, Denise Roy mentions that she was inspired by many of my own favorite authors: Anna Quindlen, Anne Lamott, Rachel Naomi Remen, Anne Dillard, Thich Nhat Hanh. I'd recommend books written by these wonderful authors, and I'd add this book to my list of highly recommended books.
