Format: Hardcover
There are many Mother Goose compilations available; however David McPhail's stands out from the crowd because of its completeness and its beautiful illustrations. I like that he combined all of these rhymes with basic concepts, as I firmly believe that learning Mother Goose is just as important as learning your letters and numbers. There are sixty three Mother Goose rhymes in this collection, thoughtfully indexed in the back according to first lines. There are also seven spreads dedicated to learning first concepts, like numbers, letters, colors, shapes, getting dressed, and action words.

A lot of these rhymes are well known, such as Humpty Dumpty and Jack Be Nimble, however there are also quite a few that I was unfamiliar with and just might be showing up in my toddler story times in the near future. Little Jumping Joan was new for me, as well as a little gem that begins "Chook, chook, chook, chock. Good morning Mrs. Hen. How many chickens have you got?"

All of the illustrations have that beautiful, cozy and timeless feel that McPhail is known for, giving this book the look and feel of a classic collectible. You just can't have too many Mother Goose collections, but if you were looking for just one to gift to a favorite grandchild, or looking to start your own collection, this is an excellent choice. This book brought back many happy memories for me from my own childhood, and helped me remember the joy I felt reciting these rhymes to my own children. It has jump started my library story times by reminding me of some rhymes I had forgotten about, and taught me a few new ones. This Mother Goose collection is an enthusiastic recommend.

This is a nice collection of Mother Goose Rhymes. Some of them are well known such as Humpty Dumpty and Little Miss Muffet. Yet there were a few in the book that we did not know in our family. The book features color photos that add a lot to the tales. We enjoyed hearing a few nursery rhymes that we did not know in our family.

The book would make a great story time or bedtime tale. You could read a few rhymes at a time to your child and discuss what they are all about.
