California-based Kathy Kallick has been a mainstay in bluegrass and traditional music since the early 1970s – first as a part of the Good Old Persons and most recently with her Kathy Kallick band. Prior recordings have appeared on Kaleidoscope (including a duet album with Laruie Lewis – since reissued on Rounder), Sugar Hill, and her own Live Oak label. My Mother’s Voice represents her first outing for Copper Creek. As the title implies, this is a collection of songs that Kathy learned from her mother. She noted, “My mom was a folksinger in the Chicago area from the mid-1950s through the ‘70s during the big “folk-revival” era - the time before singer/songwriters. She heard, researched, found, and dug up great songs in a variety of ways. She tracked down anyone who might be familiar with old folk, Appalachian, Celtic, or gospel music, and picked their brains. She went to the library and found recordings and songbooks. She went to festivals and concerts and mus! ic parties, and often hosted these parties at our house.” This collection of songs was made over a several year period, as various friends and performers passed through California and were able to record with Kathy. Guest performers include Darol Anger, Tom Bekeny, Kate Brislin, Norton Buffalo, Bill Evans, Carol Elizabeth Jones, James Leva, Laurie Lewis, Keith Little, Claire Lynch, John Miller, Lynn Morris, Jim Nunally, John Reischman, Peter Rowan, Avram Siegel, Jody Stecher, Amy Stenberg, Ron Stewart, Suzanne Thomas, Gene Tortora, and Sally Van Meter.
