Editorial Reviews

Caroline Crawford s career first began at the age of 15 on Motown Records where she recorded loads of songs but released relatively few! She re-surfaced on Philadelphia International in the early 70s with one brilliant single and a completely unreleased album, which stayed in the can as a result of disagreements with Gamble & Huff. An uncompromising singer, she teamed up with Hamilton Bohannon and sang background on his hits "South African Man", "Foot Stomping Man" and "Summertime Groove." Bohannon wrote, produced, arranged and directed the seven cuts. All Music Guide's Andrew Hamilton writes: "His patented rhythmic, shuffling sound interspersed with some ballads make this an extension of his "Summertime Groove" album which featured Crawford's vibrant vocals. This is good. Mercury's neglect kept this album from improving their bottom line or Crawford s career, in spite of infectious ditties like "Tell Me You ll Wait" "Coming On Strong," and "Caroline Breakdown." A classic soul album from a very underrated singer!!

Born in Detroit, vocalist Caroline Crawford was among the youngest signed by Motown Records, in her case in 1963 at age 13 primarily as a backing vocalist for many of their early featured artists. Towards the end of that year she got her own record, Devil In His Heart (2:25) b/w Forget About Me (2:20), released as Motown 1050 with the spelling of her first name changed to Carolyn on the label. However, two things worked against any national attention: 1) Billboard had just suspended the R&B charts, something that would last throughout 1964 and into January 1965; and 2) Motown 1051 released at the same time just happened to be When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes by some Girl-Group known as The Supremes!

However, when the R&B charts were re-instated at the end of January 1965, she broke through to some degree at least with the February # 39 R&B My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down) (2:54) b/w I'll Come Running (2:38) as Motown 1064, which made no impact at all on the more lucrative Billboard Pop Hot 100. Meanwhile, The Supremes were headed to # 1 with Come See About Me as Motown 1068. Carolyn's third release, When Someone's Good To You (2:26) b/w My Heart (2:59) as Motown 1070 went nowhere. At this stage she left the label, ostensibly to pursue an education because she did not appear on record again until 1972 when, now a beautiful young woman of 22, and with a lovely soft Soul-tinged voice, she became part of the all-girl quartet The Firm Of Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford (with Pat Hodges, Denita James and Jessica Smith) to release 2 single for the obscure Mpingo label: Nobody (3:31) b/w I'm In Love (2:29) as Mpingo 14000 and Write Me A Letter (3:25) b/w Let's Pick Up The Pieces (2:35) as Mpingo 14003.

I searched for this CD for years. I was a teenager when it came out and fell in love with 'Nice Feeling' and 'It Rains Because" and now I can hear them again.
