GIMME SOME MO'....... JOE THAT IS!,
By Dr. Shanelle "budget fashionista" (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Name Is Joe (Audio CD)
I recently purchased Joe's CD and I absolutely love it. Joecontinues to sing straight from the heart with lyrics that'll make youmelt like butter! Even the INTRO is tight! If you're going to compare you must keep one thing in mind: JOE CAN ACTUALLY SING!. Anybody can sound good in the studio with high-tech voice enhancements, but when it comes down to straight up vocal talent, R. Kelly and Keith Sweat can't touch Joe! Joe has his OWN unique sense of self, style, sex appeal, and lyricism and shines forth in this album. This album touches every feel-good emotion and makes you wanna make love. Bravo Joe! You've done it once again!Songs I highly reccomend are: Somebody's gotta be on top, Table for Two, I Wanna Know, Treat her like a Lady, Peep Show, and One Life Stand!

A Must Own CD!,
By Michael Freeman (Berea, KY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Name Is Joe (Audio CD)
What can I say? My Name Is Joe is one of the best R&B CD's ever released. This CD does not deserve a five star rating. This CD should earn a five and a half star rating! I purchased this CD on the first day it was released. I usually don't purchase a CD if I didn't previously listen to it, but Joe is one exception. The only songs that I previously heard before I purchased this CD were "I Wanna Know" and "Thank God I Found You." Joe's previous album, All That I Am, was great. I knew that Joe would have a lot of pressure on him when he created My Name Is Joe. I am proud to say that Joe did not disappoint his fans. If you thought All That I Am was a great CD, you have not seen anything yet! If you ask me, My Name Is Joe is a lot better than All That I Am. Every song on the CD is great. There are some songs that have a different sound than his previous CD. Songs such as "Stutter," "Get Crunk Tonight," and "Black Hawk," all have a different up tempo beat. "Treat Her Like A Lady" and "So Beautiful" both have a nice slow tempo rhythm. My favorite songs on the CD are, "I Wanna Know," "Somebody Gotta Be On Top," "Table For Two," "5 6 3 (JOE)," "Peep Show," "One Life Stand," "I Believe In You," and "Thank God I Found You." "Table For Two" really amazed me the first time I listened to it. The song has a very nice fast beat to it. The second half of the song has a very nice crossover sound (The best crossover sound can be heard with a good stereo). The crossover sound alternates from the right and left speakers. A very innovative idea Joe! "Thank God I Found You" is a remake of Keith Sweat's "Make It Last Forever." While the song is not quite as good as Keith Sweat's masterpiece, it is still enjoyable to the ears. Joe's vocal talent is just amazing. He is one of the best singers of R&B. Very few male singers can compare to Joe's vocals. If you have noticed, every song on the CD has been mentioned. Every song has a unique quality that will appeal to everyone. If you are a true fan of R&B music, THIS IS A MUST OWN CD!

The positives about this CD are the following: Joe can actually sing (unlike Jagged Edge or Case). He is a good producer as well, co-producing two of the album's best tracks ("Somebody gotta be on top" and "I wanna know"), four in total and enlisting some renowned producers for the rest of the album (Teddy Riley--Guy, Blackstreet and much, much more, Allstar--various remixes, She'kspere--Destiny's Child, Jon-John--Profyle, Tony Thompson, Clue and Duro--various remixes, Hip-Hop). The negatives are mostly that I'm sad to report that he's a follower--using the same oversexed subject matter that's popular right now, instead of expanding on "I wanna know" or "Don't wanna be a player" from the previous album. "Get Crunk", while a good song, conveys essentially the opposite message of "Don't wanna be a player." In terms of following trends, he goes as far as to actually enlist NSYNC on "I believe in you." That said, the album is still very enjoyable, if you enjoy upbeat, pop R&B. Joe can sing, there's no doubt about it, and the production is nice as well. He's got songs for when you're in a romantic mood ("I wanna know" "I believe in you", and "One Life Stand"), when you want to get it on with your woman ("Somebody gotta be on top", "Peep show", "So beautiful", and "Table for two"), when you want to get it on with someone other than your woman ("Get crunk"), when you break up ("Stutter"), when you want to snatch someone else's woman ("Treat her like a lady" and "5 6 3 (Joe)"), and whenever you wonder whatever happened to Keith Sweat's classic "Make it last forever", listen to "Thank God I found you Remix." It's got something for everyone. The only downfall is the oversexed subject matter and the lack of variety--like most of today's R&B it's about love, sex, and relationships. That said, I recommend the album.

.... Another classic CD by Joe,
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Name Is Joe (Audio CD)
After hearing "I Wanna Know" from "The Wood" soundtrack and "Rose In A Concrete World" from the "Romeo Must Die" soundtrack, I knew Joe would have a classic CD on his hands once it came out. "All That I Am" is already a classic album, so I knew Joe would not want to disappoint his followers by releasing a CD that didn't compare to his last album. I promise you, you will not be disappointed. "My Name Is Joe" will be a classic for many years to come. The music selection is similar to his last CD, but on this CD Joe is a "little bit more up front." While he does respect the ladies, he has more of a Keith Sweat, R Kelly, or Silk's last CD "Tonight", feel to it. This does not take the quality away from the CD, it just shows a different presentation from the artist. On his last CD, he did have "All The Things" and "The Love Scene", but on this CD you'll find about 2 or 3 more songs that cover that topic. The best songs on the CD are clearly, "Treat Her Like A Lady", "One Life Stand", "I Believe In You w/NSYNC, and "Table for Two". As an added bonus he also has the "Thank God I Found You" (Remix) w/Mariah Carey and Nas. There are a lot of r&b CDs scheduled to be released in the year 2000, but its going to take a lot of time and hard work to get better than this. So find your significant other, girlfriend, wife, "friend", or mistress, sit back and enjoy yourself. If you can't get in the mood when this CD is in the stereo, you might want to go see a doctor, Enjoy!

Joe hits five full stars with his new album,

When I experienced 'All that I am', I asked to myself 'could this be any better?'. And it was possible. 'My name is Joe', the second album by Jive artist Joe Thomas, surpasses everything I ever dreamed about R&B. Smooth, sexy lovesongs and great midtempo tracks make this album the best work Joe ever delivered. My favorite track is 'I believe in you', a collaboration with N-Sync. Other remarkeble songs on the album are 'One life stand', 'Peep show' and, of course, 'I wanna know' (from the Motion Picture Soundtrack 'The Wood). The album contains also the Keith Sweat cover 'Make it last forever', in which Joe unites with Mariah Carey for the 'Thank God I found you' remix. Joe really shows on this cd that he has developed himself, not only in his voice but also in his lyric writing quality's. All of the tracks are really great, which make this cd a 'favorite' for every R&B/ Soul lover! A little warning: Don't let your cd player crash, by listening it to much!

This guy has been around for three albums?,

Let's break down the world of male R & B. Brian Mcknight is the unquestioned ruler of the realm, Ki-Ci & JoJo is the supergroup (sorry Boyz II Men, y'all don't have a pulse no more), Carl Thomas is the newcomer, and our man, Joe Thomas (no relation) is the underrated guy. HOW HAVE WE NOT NOTICED THIS GUY FOR SO LONG? I honestly, didn't know about Joe until his great duet with Case on the Rush Hour soundtrack Faded Pictures and his guest verse on Thank God I Found You. I thought to myself, "Wow, this guy is a great NEW artist." Little did I know this talented crooner has been around for THREE ALBUMS! Now, to the disc. My Name Is Joe is an awesome CD, besides the admitedly wacky title. Until I explain it. The intro explains what he means by that, and also he's saying, "I've been around for so long, my name is Joe!" This is a superb album. I dare say, a bit better than Back At One, and also less traditional and more real than Carl Thomas's Emotional. By that I mean than Emotional is, being produced by Bad Boy and the Puff-meister,a bit a forced showstopper. My Name Is Joe is more slow and relaxed. Joe's delievery vocally is this way as well. You'll never hear him pop a lung, which is a good thing. The best tracks are: I Wanna Know: Of course, the hit that brought him long-deserved top ten success. It's an infectious single, and you'll love it still, no matter how many times you've heard it on the radio. Stutter: The most original thing to come outta Rythym and Blues town for a long time. Awesome song, you've never heard anything like it. I Believe In You: Joe knows success when he find a formula. Here it is: GET A BOYBAND. First, he shared Thank God I Found You (yeah, I know it was Mariah's song) with 98 degrees, and now he enlists NSYNC's services for one of the best tracks on the album. Treat Her Like A Lady: A nice slow one, a definite "Joe-sing-this-at-concerts-when-you-want-the-groupies-to-scream-the-loudest." There are many merely GOOD tracks, such as So Beautiful, One Life Stand, Get Crunk Tonight, and 5 6 3 (Joe). I merely detailed the tracks that are singles or WILL be singles. The version of Thank God I Found You I've been referring to in the review is the one on Mariah Carey's Album, the original version. Joe has the "hip-hop" version on the album, which I don't really care for. You make like it though. This is a great album, one of the best of the year. Get it.

Finding words to explain how good this cd is, is extremely hard. I knew I was going to enjoy it the moment I heard the interlude! I have the previous cd and it amazes me how he can keep up with the times so well. From having these two cd's, I have been convinced that I will always be a fan of JOE.

A marriage proposal for Joe,

I have been a devoted Joe fan from the very get go when he realeased his very first album a few years ago. It was then that I realized that this man had true and raw talent. His music is one that is timeless, that will never go out of style, that we all can appreciate 10 years from now--And it will still sound the same as the fisrt day we heard it ! I fell in love with Joe because when he sings a song, especially a love song, he REALLY and TRULY sings it from the debths of his soul and you can definely feel it. Call me crazy but when I listen to his music, I swear he is singing it to me, for me, and only me. And not every artist has the ability to do that. So, I would personally like to thank you Joe for once again, keeping me totally satisfied. --And by the way. . . everytime that the "I Wanna Know" music video comes on. I always evision that it is me there with him, instead of the young lady in the video !

The Best R&B CD That I Own,
This review is from: My Name Is Joe (Audio CD)
My Name Is Joe by Joe Thomas aka Joe is a great pure R&B CD. Although Shaggy's Hotshot was a classic R&B CD as well, Joe's CD has more "straight" R&B where Shaggy's CD got poppy in places. Before going any further, I must address the controversy with this CD. Alot of people have complained about the content of this album. I have to admit that Joe seems a little obsessed with getting his "freak on". However, let's remember he's singing or telling a story just like a fiction writer or watching a movie. This is not real life, people! Nothing upsets me more than to hear people blame music, movies, TV, and any other form of entertainment for their problems and their kids problems when they are unwilling to take the responsibility for themselves. If you don't like it then don't listen to it. I can't stand Eminem, so instead of wasting my time by complaining about him and his music, I just don't listen to him. However, I have never gotten a song because of lyrics--I get songs and albums because of the beat, rhythm, and just the way the whole song sounds. Enough of this diatribe, let me continue on Joe. Every track is good but the standouts are the following:#2 Somebody Gotta Be on Top -- great vocals by Joe and just an overall great sound. It along with the intro really sets the tempo. #3 Stutter -- this is the original version and one of the smoothest songs I've ever heard. Definitely one of the CD's best songs. #4 Table For Two -- a great upbeat song with good vocals by Joe. #5 I Wanna Know -- one of the biggest hits on the CD, it's one of those songs that you'll find yourself singing all day. #6 Treat Her Like a Lady -- another solid R&B number that sounds alot like R Kelly. #11 Stutter (Double Take Remix) -- this is my favorite track on the CD and maybe my favorite R&B song ever! It's just as good as #3 but has an awesome beat to it. This one song makes the whole CD worth buying! #12 I Believe in You (With N Sync) -- alot of people don't like them and they don't fit the R&B profile, but N Sync can sing and produce beautiful harmonies. They, especially Justin Timberlake, do a great job weaving their vocals with Joe. #14 Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix) -- featuring Mariah Carey and Nas, this is a great upbeat song and a great song to end the album. My only complaint is that it sounds more like a Mariah or Nas song with Joe making a cameo appearance instead of being the main performer. I honestly think in time this CD will be regarded as one of the best R&B CDs in the last 10-15 years. It's that good--buy it today! |
