Yep, My New Fighting Technique IS Unstoppable,

"My New Fighting Technique is Unstoppable" (MNFTIU for short) by David Rees is hilarious. I agree with the other reviewers when they said MNFTIU is senseless however that's the point of the book. It wasn't fashioned to follow the outline of a "normal" book. To understand MNFTIU, you need to know a little bit about the author and his intentions with MNFTIU. David Rees draws clip art comics for Rolling Stones magazine, plays in a band, and works temp jobs where he finds his inspiration for his comics. MNFTIU is based on the clip arts he collected while working at a university community health department. This is where he found Karate Snoopy, Circulatory Man, and the ambulance drivers. The fixation with fighting and technique which is mentioned over and over again is from Rees' fascination with rap music. His characters are like rappers when they freestyle (rap). Rappers battle each other with the skillfulness of their words. The one with the best "fighting technique" emerges victorious. This is a fun book to read if you do so with an open mind. If you're expecting to read it like Calvin & Hobbes or The Peanuts then you'll be disappointed. If you like South Park or even The Simpsons, there's a good chance MNFTIU will appeal to you. You can find samples of Rees' MNFTIU at http://unstoppable.com. He also has other works such as "Get Your War On" which can be viewed at http://www.mnftiu.cc/mnftiu.cc/home.html. All the royalties from this book are donated to the Adopt a Landmine charity dedicated to landmine clearance in Afghanistan. So even if you don't like his comics, you have to appreciate his contributions.

If we're made extinct by a nuclear war and alien visitors a thousand years from now find a vault with books representing Earth's history and culture, My New Fighting Technique is Unstoppable should represent how average Americans talked in the early 21st century. To the pointy-headed intellectuals, the book is NOT pointless, but personafies the daily struggles every individual endures to attain a goal, a dream, whether to invent a new technique, or gather up the courage to face the Circulatory System Motherf-cker. The characters approach martial arts in the most superficial and deluded way, and yet I think that's Rees' stinging indictment of our values in our artificial modern lives. Also check out My New Filing System is Unstoppable too.

Unstoppable humor,

David Rees' blend of witty, acerbic, profane humor is brilliant - just read Get Your War on to see that his biting wit is right on and he has some funny stuff to say. Most people with a sense of humor can find the fun in this book - so many great one-liners! If you're a fan of the Onion, the Daily Show, SNL, or anything with an edge of sarcasm, you'll love this. After all, that's what it's all about. I guess the people who don't like it just don't get it.

...Or so I am told. This book is hysterical. However, it is only fair for me to point out that almost every other person I have shown it to does NOT agree with me. It truly is a book for the strange and unusual. And for the people who want to laugh out loud. Pick this one up...well worth it.

I was reading this on the subway and drinking some Sprite and I laughed so hard that Sprite came out of my nose. That might not have made the other people on the train so happy, but I was too busy laughing to notice. I promise if you read this you'll laugh really really hard, too, but you probably should stay away from carbonated beverages for a while.

My New Fighting Technique Is Unstoppable isn't like anything else I've ever seen--the only comparison is David Rees' other book, Get Your War On. It also combines clip art and profanity with hilarious results. This is so funny, and so weird--my favorite part was the karate guys trash-talking to each other. It's hard to explain, because as the other reviewers have pointed out, you either get it or you don't. But I don't see how you couldn't get this, unless you just have no sense of humor or are easily offended by four-letter words. Go to www.unstoppable.com to see if it's for you or not.

If there ever was a book that defined the cliché, 'You have to see it to believe it,' My New Fighting Technique Is Unstoppable (MNFTIU) is it. How do you describe comics that have a character called Karate Snoopy (yes, of Peanuts fame), a dude with bricks on his head, a guy that is simply a circulatory system, and someone called 'Normal Man'? Exactly. Ya can't! If you like adult swim on cartoon network, you are going to love, my new fighting technique is unstoppable. Kick your sarcasm into high gear and enjoy a good laugh on me.

I can definatly see where people would be disapointed expecting a comic book with great animation and story. But the author wasn't going for this at all. The images are purposly bad. There is no story. This is a collection of the authors strip first found on the internet. The images are clipart made from an old macintosh program used to "create your own comic book". If you unserstand the author isn't trying to make a work of art and just good laugh at insane humor then you will be pleased. The humor is definatly insane and off the wall. The fact that he reuses images for completly different scenes, or vise versa reuses dialog with completey different images is just great stuff. You can always check out a handfull of the strips at www.unstoppable.com to see if your humor matches the books. It did for me.

How in the world did David Rees' Kung Fu get this good? I've read this 16 times and laugh harder with each read. Clip-art has never been this inspired or this a**-kicking.

David Rees was bored at work. So bored that he occupied his time creating comics from out of PowerPoint using the cheesy clipart graphics. He started faxing those comics to his friends, who, of course, forwarded them to their friends. Those who love "Office Space" can appreciate his ingenuity. His book, "My New Fighting Technique is Unstoppable" (or MNFTIU for those in the know), chronicles the adventures of a group of martial arts fiends -- they can't wait to fight one another -- with strange names and stranger powers. Egging each other on with profane taunts full of teenage bravado, they fight to show each other the inside of ambulances. These comics can't be explained; they are so out-of-this-world, much like Gary Larsen's "Far Side". Knowing that they were made with clipart makes it all the more hilarious. Visit www.unstoppable.com to join the fun. |
