Editorial Reviews

Al Jarreau and George Duke were friends long before they became household names. They began playing together in the mid-1960's in San Francisco as Al Jarreau and the George Duke Trio. The successes of these performances are what helped to launch both their careers. George's tragic passing in August, 2013, inspired Al to record this loving tribute to his longtime friend. With the exception of the fitting title track composed by Jarreau, all the tunes were written by George. Guest artists/collaborators include Gerald Albright, Stanley Clarke, Dr. John, Lalah Hathaway, Boney James, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves and Patrice Rushen. There's even a song with George Duke playing on it!

"My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke" is Al Jarreau's homage to George Duke, who passed away at the age of 67 on August 5, 2013. He was one of those musicians who remain outside the scope of the general public and was best known as composer, singer and producer in the jazz and popular mainstream musical genres. He left behind some thirty-odd solo albums, but was also known for his collaborations, particularly with Frank Zappa, but could also be heard on albums from Phil Collins, Michael Jackson and Miles Davis. He is homaged by his long-time friend and colleague Al Jarreau, the jazz and R & B pop singer known for his scat singing and ability to imitate music instruments with his voice (like at the start of track "My Old Friend").

Way back in 1981, Duke worked with singer Al Jarreau as keyboardist and arranger for "Breakin' Away," one of Jarreau's most commercially successful albums (track "Roof Garden" was a major hit in the Netherlands, where I live, and my introduction to Al). On this tribute-album, Al Jarreau re-interprets compositions by Duke with the help of several colleagues, most of whom also had connections to George, so this has therefore become a duet album with sultry R & B, soul and soft jazz tracks. It sounds far from modern, like it was produced in the 80s, which is not surprising given the participation of musicians such as Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne ("Wings Of Love") and Patrice Rushen ("Forget Me Nots").

However, the slick '80s vibe of songs like "Bring Me Joy" and "My Old Friend" feels really comfortable. The same applies to the languid bossa nova that we hear in the form of "Brazilian Love Affair," the breezy "Somebossa (Summer Breezin')" and the soulful "No Rhyme, No Reason." The most notable song is the funky jam "You Touch My Brain," on which Dr.

I wasn't aware that Al Jarreau and George Duke had a history that spans back to the 1960s. After doing a little research, I was surprised to learn that Al and George started collaborating in San Francisco before Richard Nixon was elected president. While this was indeed surprising, it didn't take long for me to figure out why these two artists were a perfect match for each other. Jarreau is one of the premiere jazz vocalists of all time and Duke was the master of funk, soul and R&B so it would only make sense for them to work with each other. These songs are mostly George Duke cover tunes, but they have a special vibe that is buttressed by the help of guest stars including Marcus Miller, Boney James and Dianne Reeves. There's even a posthumous appearance by the late, great Mr. Duke! Now that I've had a bit of a history lesson about these two artists, I'm going to enjoy jumping back into my catalog of George Duke titles even more. Oh! And there's even an unlisted bonus track available from a link in the liner notes - nice touch!

I was very happy to have pre ordered this cd. I was listening to some Al Jerreau one night and decided to look on amazon if he had any new music out. I kind of fell out of his musical loop for quite awhile, but never left George Duke's music. Well I was very surprised to see that there was this new cd being shipped in a few weeks. So I placed my order and received it today. I thought George Duke was one of the greatest musicians, and I started following him way back since the Frank Zappa days. He was the new keyboard player with the Mothers and it was a surprise when Frank introduced this new face to the audience at the fillmore east, and he fit right into the group. George was given a lot of room to open up his vocal chops with Zappa and the stuff they did together is still amazing to hear. " Inca Roads" is one of the most memorable, but there are dozens more. I followed Georges music all the was till his passing last year and met him on a few occasions. He was a wonderful man and always had a smile on his face.
This is a great CD in many regards. Dr. John sounds great on " you touched my brain" and everyone else who contributed their time and talent should be thanked many times over for their efforts and dedication to George and Al.
Thank you Al for this great cd... good music still can be found if you look for it...

On August 5th, 2013, the jazz and fusion music world lost the versatile stylings of musician George Duke. A year later to the day, George's great friend Al Jarreau will be releasing a tribute CD called "My Old Friend - Celebrating George Duke."

George and Al have had a friendship that has spanned over forty years. Their friendship went beyond their industry affiliation. In an interview Al revealed that George would be the kind of buddy that would come over to his place and stay until it got late at night. Al fondly talked about the night George stayed too late and Al's mum had to ask him to leave so that they could get to church early the next day.

The CD is a reflection of the friendship that the two have shared, a friendship that remains unbreakable even after George's demise. On the tribute compilation, Al has secured a few of George's friends to help with making the CD one that is charted for success.

There are 10 tracks on the CD with a bonus track for those who participated in the crowd-funding project. Lending their musical talents are artists and musicians from the jazz and R&B fraternity, two genres that George played heavily in. They include Boney James, Gerald Albright, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves, Lalah Hathaway, Stanley Clarke and Dr. John.

The CD's title track "My Old Friend" may be a reworking of Al's old popular song but the lyrics definitely bring new meaning as it pertains to Al and George's friendship. The track which has been slower than the original version serves to keep the spirit of George alive as Al sings "still together/ after all these years/always been my old friend/ true until the end of time.

Al Jarreau and Friends tribute to George Duke
George Duke music will always live on. He was more than just exceptionally talented. He was immensely gifted on piano, keyboards, and synthesizers. He also was a very good vocalist with his distinctive voice and superb songwriting. It saddens me that he is no longer with us. It has been nearly... Read More
