5.0 out of 5 stars A surprise, July 18, 2010
This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
I had "My One and Only" on a list of recent movies I had missed and after viewing it, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this charming, slightly over-the-top film. Renée Zellweger plays the often beaten down but nonetheless driven mother of two teenage boys, whose own separation from her husband has her, quite literally, driven to leave him. And drive she and the boys do! From Boston to California, it's one missed opportunity after another as Zellweger runs into a cast of losing suitors...several played by actors of note.

The pace is decidedly slow, but that makes "My One and Only" all the better. While Zellweger is the glue that holds the family (and the movie) together, a wonderful performance is turned in by Logan Lerman, who plays the older son George. George serves as narrator and his emotional expressiveness is just right for the part. I highly recommend "My One and Only" and I wouldn't be surprised if the viewer might want to see it for a second time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would not call this a comedy, but a worthy product overall, November 18, 2009
This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
Once again I was ordering this on the premise similar to what you see on the cover: "funny", "cheerful comedy" and the cover showing everyone smiling. There were several lines that were laugh-out-loud funny, but this was more of a drama about an angered wife traveling cross country with her two teen boys to hop from sugar daddy to sugar daddy.

The performances were adequate, with even Chris Noth having a brief part as a one of the lunatics she briefly picks to marry. David Koechner plays a great little role as another one of the crazies she tried to marry. Renee plays her role quite well, but it is hard to feel for her as she leap frogs from man to man, uprooting the boys each time as they travel to California from New York. Logan Lerman (who I first remember from Meet Bill) succinctly plays one of her boys, that if you do not read the art or remember the spoiler ads - gives a nice twist at the end of who he becomes.

The picture quality is fine, but it could definitely use a Blu treatment. The sound is 5.1, but the strength of making this 3.5 star film a 5 is the two documentaries. Both last just over 30 minutes each and have a plethora of great material about the making of and creation process. Some of the best moments though are how candid everyone is (especially the writer - Peters) with how broken the Hollywood film making/writing process is. I was laughing harder here than in the film at how sadly honest they were in what it takes to sell a film in Southern California now - worth the watch on their own.

Overall, not a solid piece for fans of the supporting cast (Bacon, Noth, Koechner, Stahl) as each only have short appearances. The film hinges on Renee who graces the screen in the way she is known for, and the "twist" of discovering who her kid becomes - but the emotions feel a little shallow. Hope you enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedy Drama, September 24, 2010

This movie is so underated. We went to see it because it was the only adult movie playing last year in September.

The movie plays out like movies of the 1940's and 50'... just so entertaining. It kinda reminds me of Neil Simon plays.

Sad that only action flicks and kids animated movies are the movies that we are inundated with today. I just absolutely loved it !!!

4.0 out of 5 stars almost realistic/ no car chases or explosions, July 5, 2010
This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
This movie begins in 1953, the year I was born. I had no expectations when I watched it on TV; I didn't know anything about the movie. I continued to watch because of the cast and the artful, creative opening sequence. I liked that there was no plot, it just kept going on, like real life. The period outfits, cars, sets and hairdos seemed perfect to me. The screenplay never gets boring, it is continually interesting. I recommend this film if you are tired of the same old predictable plots and action sequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Your story is a bit exaggerated, isn't it?", March 14, 2010
This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
If nothing else, My One and Only always keeps you on your toes. The movie follows Anne Deveraux (Renée Zellweger) and her two sons as she flees from a broken marriage and looks for a new life. Anne travels from New York to California looking for a new sugar daddy, but more often getting into trouble. One thing I really like about the movie is that the three main characters keep moving around, injecting new characters and plot twists constantly. Each potential suitor for Anne has a fatal flaw, from the overbearing military colonel to the insane matrimonialist. This isn't a cheery comedy, but I think you'll probably laugh at the absurdity of it all.

one of my favorite movies of all time. All of the actors delivered an A+ performance and kudos to the production team for period pics are extremely difficult to make. I feel the studio dropped the ball on this one and probably would have done better box office if it didn't have such a lame title.

4.0 out of 5 stars My One and Only..., December 24, 2010
This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
Caught this on cable approx. Thanksgiving, 2010. I hate to admit it, but I enjoyed this one. Renee Zellweger's delivers, in my opinion, an excellent portrayal of a proper Southern Mom with seemingly Romantic notions of everything ending with a happy ending, even when it all falls apart. And it does fall apart, more than once! From her cheating husband, to her mentally-warped fiance (and serial bigamist)! Somehow, she shoots for the sunny-side of the street. Her two sons, they have their share of issues, also. Ultimately, mom takes her sons across the country for the trip to Hollywood, to give her oldest son a chance to make it in the movies. It doesn't quite work out that way, but see the movie, and you'll see what I mean!

Overall: I enjoyed it - and will purchase it at some point!

I rate "My One and Only" 4 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars to find the one and only meaning of our lives!, May 15, 2010

This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
Renee Zellweger shines as Ann, a wife who finds out about her cheating husband and takes her two sons on a road trip in search of new beginning. The two sons' characters are as smart and deep as well as entertaining and ironic!

The family's journey takes us on emotional trips through their souls, dreams and what is really important to them. The story is based on George Hamilton's early life, and the movie surprises you with an amazing cast of great actors.
I'm not surprised that these kinds of movies don't make much money; they are just too deep and sensitive to satisfy the seemingly opiate infused minds of average viewers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story/Drama and Dark Comedy, May 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: My One and Only (DVD)
I enjoyed this movie very much and watched it twice; it reminds me a little of the film, This Boys Life. There's the mother's adventurous search for a new husband and life and her always-optimistic expectations versus the (sometimes comedic but often ruthless) reality and truth of how women were often treated in the 40's and 50's era. There's a variety of interesting characters and experiences in the story with drama, unexpected twists and turns, irony, and sardonic comedy. The fashions, cars, and other pop culture shown are all attractive and colorful and look true to the era depicted, as I remember the 50's anyway.

Logan Lerman as the 15 year old George Hamilton, cast alongside the always talented Renée Zellweger as Anne Deveraux and the remarkable Mark Rendall as George's older half-brother, William "Robbie" Potter.

Do not miss the most sentimental performance yet from these three briliant stars in the setting of the Old Golden Hollywood Glamour era.
