A wide cross-section of Rebetika, April 28, 2008

This CD displays a wide variety of songs - about love, about life in among the low-lifes, and instrumental pieces. I strongly recommend this CD both to people who do not speak Greek and know little about Rebetika and those who can understand the lyrics. There is enough musical variety in this CD to make it worthwhile for an open-minded listener to find at least one song that will "hook" you. Rebetika is the Mother Lode of modern Greek music, the reference point from which all departures leave. And for those of us who speak Greek, the lyrics here are something else! My personal favorite is Stellios Keromitis' "I Moni Mou Parigoria (My Only Consolation)" One of those songs that stays in the imagination, and burrows into the unconscious mind.
