This review is from: My Other Band 1 (Audio CD)
Straight to the point! 5 side bands doing 3 songs each. Here we go.Band 1 is My Red Hot Nightmare featuring Ethan Luck of The Supertones. These songs are from the Clash school of rock with a bit of Ramones tossed in. Not bad, but really just 8 minutes of stuff we've heard for the past few decades. Band 2 is Matthew (Relient K singer) Thiessen's side project who've released a few comp tracks to date. "The Calander, The Energy (If This Is You Then Woe Is Me)" already appeared on 2005's THE REVOLUTION WILL BEGIN IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE Vol. 2 disc - also on the Mono Vs. Stereo label. Though this version has been slightly garnished a bit from what I can hear. Now if you don't have this song, then it's bound to be your favorite track here. Definately Thiessen magic working on this one! "The Warmth Of The Sun" is a cover of the Brian Wilson song and sounds too much like the original for my tastes. Matt does nothing refreshing on it. A Yawner. Finally, "Faking My Own Suicide" is a demo and sounds nothing like Relient K or his previous Earthquakes stylings. It's a unique and kind of sparse little ditty, but it's not quite up to snuff to be honest. Sorta disappointing. Oh well.Band 3 is Tyler Burkum of Audio Adrenaline. All three tracks have a modern americana sound. Laid back Black Crowes meets Petty comes to mind. And if that sounds like your thing than you might like these tunes. Not sure if AA fans will be jumping for joy though.Band 4 is Agnes which IS Dave Douglas of Relient K, as he plays ALL the instruments on these peppy little numbers. While not sounding quite like Relient K of course, the tunes do have a similair energy and vibe (with less of a glossy production quality), and should be quite enjoyed by RK fans. And Dave's voice is better than I had expected. This is the disc's most pleasant surprise. Band 5 is Royal Empire Music with Oran Thornton (of the now defunct Bleach) producing and on guitar. However he does not sing or write. Instead, this band's frontman is Davy Baysinger. Will Bleach fans dig this? Perhaps. It's definately in the same musical neighborhood Bleach resided in, but on a much mellower street. "Down Strokes" with it's mid-tempo beat, has the closest sounding vibe to Bleach. While the other two songs are very soft and quiet, and not a whole lot seems to happen other than a few whispy sounds floating in and out of the mix. Overall, this isn't the type of collection where a person will end up liking each of these songs, much less half of them. But if you're a fan of any of the artists mentioned (especially Relient K), this might help with the "other band" withdrawl symptoms enough to get you through the summer!
