Book Description

1998
In this revised edition of My Own Harlem, as in the first edition, Pellom McDaniels, in Langston Hughes-like pensiveness, gives us an opportunity to look into the heart of a displaced young man trying to reach out to the world around him. In fearless style, he writes about the development of an African American original, Jazz, and the historic 18th & Vine district of Kansas City.

About the Author

Pellom McDaniels is a gifted defensive lineman, able to play every position on the defensive line. A consistent player with his heart in the game, McDaniels is reliable both on and off the field, making him one of the best loved Chiefs in Kansas City.

McDaniels established the "Arts for Smarts" foundation, a program designed to expose disadvantaged children to the fine and applied arts and encourage both expressive development and creative thinking. Pellom founded "Arts for Smarts" to share his love of the creative and applied arts with children.

In 1998 the Presidents Committee for the Arts and Hunmanities, headed by Harriet Fulbright, recognized "Arts for Smarts" as a national model for community based programs in the United States.

This review is from: My Own Harlem (Paperback)
Thought there were some very interesting metaphors about life and the association with where everything is in the African American Community. Would like to read more on the perspective from this individual.
