5 Million Stars for Woody!,
By
This review is from: In My Own Sweet Way (Audio CD)
I've been a Woody Shaw fan since the '70's and have always been amazed at his distinctive sound, and flawless technical ability. In this live import set from 1987, Woody joins an unknown European rhythm section on a group of 7 originals and standards. The sound quality is excellent, the group sounding as if they have playing together forever. Everyone solos, but Woody is the star of the show, and the undisputed leader of post-bop trumpet. His take on the bop standard "Sippin' at Bells" is a great example of modern jazz trumpet playing, sounding as fresh as if it was recorded yesterday. Being the only horn in a session, especially on trumpet, can be demanding; Woody simply makes it look easy. Like all great musicians, Woody simply transcends the instrument and speaks directly from the heart. Highly Recommended!
