Book Description

December 10, 2007
The one book every artist should own. To be truly successful every artist must balance the scale with equal efforts in business and marketing. This book provides valuable insight and practical applications to help every artist accomplish their dream. A little humor is used to help you learn the practical business solutions that are not taught in any art school. In the How do I keep Track of My painting Chapter you will learn about Work Completed Book, Labels to go on each painting, just to name a few points, What on Earth happened to that painting? will cover such things as inventory of originals, sold inventory, where have they been. One chapter not to miss is: Photographing the work. This is vital for any artist that wants to get into shows, galleries, museums, magazines, books, and licensing. Framing artwork is so important If you have a good painting a bad frame will make it horrible, where if you have a good painting in a great frame, you have a wonderful painting with a better opportunity to sell. The business side of things is the next chapter. This covers copyright law, licensing, creating a business name and logo, and much, much more important business information., Consigning your Work comes next, followed by Setting your Price. Next you have Off to the Market, which includes Shipping and handling, packaging, documents, domestic and international shipping The Exhibition is critical for anyone wanting to get into shows or galleries. My favorite chapter is Artist Etiquette full of great information for new artists. The final Chapter is Defending yourself against stupidity; Tall but true tales of what you will hear from the general public. The book is closed with a Recommended Resources List. A must for every artist!!!

Editorial Reviews

Review

What famous artists said about this book: Leonardo de Vinci - I particularly like the section on copyright law - Suzie should be up on the head table. Claude Monet - If I'd had this book, I would have been more productive, and done more shows, instead of just painting all those damn water lilies. Vincent Van Gogh - I hear it is a great book, but I couldn't read my copy because Gauguin stole it, and took it to the South Pacific. Michelangelo - It's disarming to think that a woman has written this great book. I found the section on accepting commission very helpful. Rembrandt - I thought the chapter on Phoitograpy was wonderful. Now all we have to do is invet the camera! Georges Seurat - This book is great. Suzie made a lot of good points! Pablo Picaso - If I'd had this book, I would have been a very succesful artist and I never would have gone thought my blue period. Paul Gauguin - This is a great beach book!!! I took it to Tahiti with me. Johannes Vermeer - I would have given a pearl earring for this book. Vincent - I have an extra earring now! Edgar Degas - This book is so great it makes me want to dance! This is a Ballet good book. Edvard Munch - AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!! And I mean this is the nicest possible way. Salvador Dali - If I'd read Suzie's great marketing tips earlier, I could have sold that damned painting before the watch melted. --Invented by the author

About the Author

Who is Suzie Seerey-Lester. Well, besides being married to John Seerey-Lester, one of the worlds top wildlife artist, she has been a painter in her own right for many years. For some 30 years she was a diver and diving instructor trainer where she brought her skills to important use when she worked for the CIA. She also trained Secret Service Agents, FBI and other law enforcement personnel how to dive, and other specialized skills. Before turning a professional artist, Suzie worked for several Fortune 500 companies where she excelled in Sales and Marketing. In her last position working for an international corporation, she was responsible for more than $2 Million in sales per month. She eventually turned professional artist, leaving the corporate world behind her, but not forgetting the skills she had acquired along the way. Even so, over the years she has suffered the pitfalls and hard knocks of selling art that all artists go thru. From these experiences, she sharpened her business skills and created these systems to pass on to other artists. When she is not painting she is in charge of the business end of the Seerey-Lester organizations. Suzie now travels all over the globe to paint, from Alaska to Maine, Africa, Guatemala, England, Spain, with her husband John. She has won several distinguished awards for her art including Artist of the Year from the Oceans Foundation, Top 200 and Top 100 in Arts for the Parks, and has shown in Bennington Art Museum, Coos Bay Art Museum, Grants Pass Art Museum and the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson's Birds in Art&. She has sold pieces at Christie's and Sotheby's Art Auctions in London, The National Zoo in Washington, DC and Honolulu Zoo. She wan honored by the Raymond James Foundation in Women in the Arts. Her paintings are in high demand from galleries all over the world. Her artwork is published in The Best Of Oil painting book. Her pieces are collected and shown internatoally as well as in several galleries and International Wildlife Shows. She is a member of the Society of Animal Artists (SAA), Oil Painters of America (OPA), American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA), Artists for Conservation (AC) the Wildlife Artists Association (WAA), and a founding member of the Southern Plein Art Artists (SPAA) and the famous PhArtists. From May until November every year Suzie volunteers for the Mote Marine Loggerhead Research Program on the turtle patrol for the loggerhead turtles. She is licensed by the State of Florida to identify and verify nests, collect data, rescue and release the endangered baby loggerhead and green turtles. In 2000 she married world-renowned wildlife artist, John Seerey-Lester. They live, work and play in Florida. What a truly lucky lady she is. Suzie is considered by many to be a real mermaid.
