Book Description

July 1988
Eight young pet owners recount their experiences with and feelings for their pets.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 Interesting details fill each of the eight chapters in which children talk about their pets. Young readers will learn that parrots can eat with spoons, horses enjoy toys, and that it takes 15 gallons of water to shampoo a sheep. The children in the book come alive through details about their lives. One latchkey child finds comfort in coming home to her guinea pigs, not an empty house, and a girl whose parents are divorced visits her father and worries the whole week about her cat. The narratives convey the message that pets require responsibility and work, and can bring sadness. But the main message is that these children enjoy and love their pets. Each chapter includes black-and-white photographs, some of them very good, of the children and their animals. Kathleen Odean, formerly at San Rafael Public Library, Calif.
