Book Description

Award-winning author-illustrator Bob Staake has created a rollicking picture book about a boy and his most unusual pet!
Most pets are cats and dogs, but what happens when a boy wants a different kind of pet, one that doesn’t meow or bark? Bob Staake’s exuberant tale of a little boy and the pet of his dreams will appeal to anyone whose best friends are . . . books! Books make the perfect pets, the boy decides, and chooses a bright red one. When it goes missing, a lively adventure is in store for readers who love a happy ending. Soon kids everywhere will wish for a pet book of their very own.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Every child wants a pet, but if one has allergies or limited space, it might be hard to find a pet that fits comfortably into one's lifestyle. "Most pets, you know, are cats and dogs./Go out and take a look./But there's a boy in Smartytown/Whose pet is…a little book." As difficult as it is to choose just one book for a pet, a little red volume with a tight binding stands out as a perfect choice in the bookstore. That is, until the boy returns home one day to find that the maid has mistakenly donated his pet book to a charity. They race to the thrift shop to try to recover it before the shop closes. The book is found, hiding in a safe place. The digital illustrations are wonderful—colorful, exaggerated, and whimsical. Readers will enjoy the silly details, like the depictions of some of the nasty behaviors of "other" pets. This book will tickle readers who have or long for pets. The rhyming scheme is reliable and children will enjoy predicting the last word in a stanza.—Mary Hazelton, formerly at Warren & Waldoboro Elementary Schools, ME

From Booklist

What makes a pet a pet? Four legs, fur, fins, feathers—or is it simply that a pet is a friend? In that case, the boy in Staake’s latest has it all figured out. His frisky red hardcover brings him into its stories and lets him imagine himself as the hero. How nice! In addition, it’s very low maintenance. It never ate. It never drank. / It couldn’t do a trick. / It never shed. It had no fleas. / It couldn’t fetch a stick. That’s all dandy until one day his family’s over-zealous maid gives the book to charity. A search ensues, and just when all seems lost, a lucky reunion saves the day. Staake is known for his retro-looking illustrations full of bold colors and round-headed characters, and here his cityscapes are simply packed with detail, bringing to mind a much hipper Richard Scarry world. Fun for all, but bookworms who are allergic to traditional animal friends will most especially take a shine to this, begging to make this book their own personal pet. Preschool-Grade 2. --Karen Cruze

5.0 out of 5 stars A Love-Letter to Books July 8, 2014
By Psyche
I have a little boy who loves books. He takes books with him everywhere we go: In the car; to church; out to dinner; to my parents' house, etc. There are stacks of his books in every room of our house. He loves books almost as much as he loves his cat, Molly Kitten. And books, unlike Molly Kitten, have never destroyed a single doorframe.

It is easy to see how a child who loves books would love THIS book which is a silly and sweet love-letter to books. But beyond that, I think this delightful red book could be the perfect hook for preschoolers and early elementary students who have not yet discovered the magic that books can contain.

The text is silly. And catchy. And so much fun to read out loud. But it is the phenomenal artwork that makes this book so enchanting. On one two-page spread, there is a dog drinking out of a toilet bowl; on the next, there is a dragon and a rocket and a purple octopus. What more could any kid want?

5.0 out of 5 stars Pet Books Are The Best! August 3, 2014
I just read this book at Barnes and Noble, came home and just bought from Amazon! I already love Bob Staake's illustrations from his Bugs Galore, Toys Galore and Cars Galore picture books (those are must-haves too) and this book is just as lovely! The perfect pet for the loveliest of imaginations. A huge hit in my opinion!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for book lovers! December 29, 2014
By The DMS
Most kids want a dog or a cat for a pet. Not the smartest boy in Smartytown! He wants a pet that’s “easy”. He begs his parents, and they agree that he can get a pet book. Oh the excitement of having a pet that doesn’t need to eat or drink, nor will it shed. As an added bonus, the boy can read it and fall into the tales inside the pages. It seems like the perfect pet, until it goes missing. Where can it be? What makes a pet book better than a regular pet? Will the boy and his book be reunited? Enjoy the unique illustrations in this vibrant picture book, which tells the story just as easily as the words do.

I was drawn to the bright colored cover and I like the way the illustrator draws our eye to the boy walking his pet book. My Pet Book by Bob Staake is a double treasure because the interesting illustrations hold so many clues. It's a book that an emerging reader could easily tell just from looking at the pictures. It's a fun read for kids and book lovers of all ages. By the end of the book I was ready to curl up with one of my favorites and enjoy some one on one book time.

This book is great! I read it to my 3 and 4 year old and they both loved it! So did I :) Everyone loves books, and a book can be a great friend, so why not a pet book? ;) Really good and not at all annoying to read like some children's books!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Pet Book August 4, 2014
Bob Staake once again delights readers with his newest read aloud, My Pet Book. What kind of pet do you get when you don't care for puppy dogs and kittens make you sneezy? Why, a pet book of course! After all, pet books don't run away, they have no fleas, and they don't have to be fed. Inside, there are all sorts of tales sure to keep every owner occupied for hours. And, as our young book owner quickly learns, no matter how big or small, new or old, every book is a friend.
