From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-Anna loves dogs and has a collection of stuffed dogs, dog slippers, china dogs. When her father finally lets her have a real one, the little girl is surprised at the changes in the house-destroyed school books, puddles on the carpet, even chewed slippers. The writing is very simple and brief, and the illustrations are colorful and lively, with enough clutter to convey the realities of life with a puppy. While this book gives a good picture of how much work is involved in keeping a pet, it's also an affectionate look at just how irresistible and enjoyable puppies can be.

From Booklist
Ages 4^-7. Kids with a passion for pets will recognize themselves in this story. Anna loves dogs. She has china dogs, stuffed dogs, and even doggy bedroom slippers. When her father gives her a puppy named Tess, she is overjoyed. However, raising a puppy is harder than she had imagined: Tess makes puddles on the floor and chews everything in sight. When Tess chews her favorite slippers, Anna shouts that she doesn't want her anymore. But after the puppy cries from loneliness in the night, Anna decides to become her real friend. This engaging story is gently instructive without preachiness. The pen-and-watercolor illustrations are lightly comic and delicately drawn. Dog lovers will particularly enjoy the many droll pictures of dogs and doggy paraphernalia.
