Book Description

November 4, 2009
More than 400,000 people complete a marathon in the United States each year. This book is about twelve of those runners. Why they run. What running has done for them-and to them. Their triumphs and their failures. My Running Club is not a "how to run a marathon" book. It is fiction, but it reveals the truth behind marathon training programs and the people who set the pace of their lives on the running trail. Alan Anderson has completed sixteen marathons, one ultra-marathon, and numerous half marathons, 10k races, and 5k races. He has coached marathon and half-marathon runners for a dozen years. He lives in Houston with his wife Betsy, who is also a long-distance runner.

I read a lot more nonfiction than novels, so I am much more comfortable recommending the former than the latter.

But, after I finished reading the book "My Running Club" -- subtitled "A Novel of Love, Life and Marathons" -- recently, I would have to say that I recommend it to anyone who is involved in a group training program for half marathons or marathons.

No matter where you live, you will recognize characteristics or personalities of some of your own running or walking companions in bits and pieces of the stories about twelve runners told by marathon/half-marathon coach Alan Anderson.

As he says in chapter 1, "The stories in the following pages are true even though the specific facts are made up."

Again, I am not some highfalutin' critic of novels, and I will not pretend to be one here.

But I will tell you that I enjoyed the novel, including the way that Anderson took a separate chapter to concentrate on each character and then used the final chapter to tie all the individual stories together.

My favorite part? The short, rhythmic verse titled "Running" on the final page. In those final twelve lines, the author beautifully captured how friendships arise among those who train together for marathons and half marathons.

Get and read "My Running Club" -- highly recommended!

Health/Love/Happiness,

Kirk

A friend recommended this book to me b/c I am about to do a half marathon and have just joined a running group to help me train. I was surprised to find that while the story is loosely centered on a running group, the book is actually made up of 12 short stories, each about a person that just happens to be a marathon runner in this group. There are some divorces, some marriages, some affairs, some deaths, and some births. Some of the stories are serious, while others are funny. Each runner's story interacts with another runner's story in some way, and the author does a great job tying the stories together at the end. I'm just hoping my running group is as exciting!
