Book Description

April 5, 2010
Joao lives in a sanctuary called Chimp Eden in South Africa. He is the oldest known chimp in his group. He tells the sad story of how he was taken from his family and sold to a circus, ultimately to sit in a small cage at a zoo for more than 50 years. Now Joao has been rescued and lives in the Chimp Eden sanctuary as part of the Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa. After his many years in captivity, he learns that people can be good and caring. Another chimp named Cozy is also rescued and comes to the sanctuary, where Joao helps him and the other chimps to become a family. The staff at Chimp Eden give these abused and neglected chimps a life as close as possible to the one stolen away from them. This adventure for youthful readers succeeds on many levels, as it balances ecology, animal behavior and some unforgettable chimpanzees. "A truly enthralling read for young and old," - Chimp Eden Sanctuary Manager Phillip Cronje, www.janegoodall.co.za. "This is a sensitive and insightful book and a perfect guide to being in the other's place," - Animal World USA Development Director Susan McCauley, www.animalworldusa.org "Children love stories. This delightful book, with its captivating illustrations, tells the true stories of Joao, Cozy and some of the other orphaned chimpanzees who have been lucky enough to end up in Chimp Eden. It will help young people - and their parents - understand the dangers faced by chimpanzees in the wild and the often brutal treatment they receive in captivity. It will generate empathy and a desire to help. A perfect gift for all children who love animals." - Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, Founder - the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace, www.janegoodall.org Author Doreen Ingram wanted to show the plight of the chimpanzee as an endangered animal. My Sanctuary, a Place I Call Home is her first book. "Jane Goodall has been an inspiration to me. I believe God meant for us to be good to each other and everything he created, including animals." She is a volunteer foster parent for the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, in Pensacola (www.pensacolawildlife.com). Ingram lives with her family in Milton, Florida, and is working on her next book. Publisher's website: http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/MySanctuary-APlaceICallHome.html

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

It was a great experience writing this book and being able to share what i feel the chimps might have been feeling while going through their tramatic experiences.
Being a nurse and having to put myself in the "shoes" of patients, I have a lot of empathy and care about the feelings of others. Though the chimps can't talk and tell us how they feel, I did my best to put it into words.

About the Author

My love for animals began as a small child. Going around the neighborhood collecting frogs in a bag and letting them out in my yard so I could watch them was my kind of fun.
I can remember almost getting beat up when I was about nine years old because I yelled at a boy for throwing a cat up in the air and letting him hit the ground. I was shaking and crying because I was so upset at seeing this.
I remain commited to speaking out for animals and wildlife.
The chimpanzees are being hunted down in the wild and I have to do my part in helping them.
Writing this book was my way of getting the word out.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home, April 19, 2010
This review is from: My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home (Paperback)
This book brought tears to my eyes. Doreen's insightful rendition, in the first person, of how an elderly chimp was first brought to the sanctuary, having never lived in such an environment, and then helping another chimp who was damaged, brought home the realities of life as a chimpanzee in this day and age. It also created much empathy for their plight, and helps both children and adults to see the big picture and understand that if we do not help, life as we know it for so many creatures, will cease to exist..and then-our lives will be irrevocably altered forever as well! I highly recommend this for schools, libraries and for readers of all ages. You will realize the chimpanzee's existence is part of the big picture-we cannot lose one species nor group of animals without having it make a huge impact on the others- AND on US!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joy To Read!, May 10, 2010
This review is from: My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home (Paperback)
"My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home" is a must read for children and adults as well. Doreen Ingram's stories of the chimpanzees who now reside at the sanctuary, Chimp Eden, not only stir your heart but provide an education as to the plight of these marvelous creatures. Different emotions will stir within you as you read the accounts of some of the chimps' background stories as seen through the eyes of the elder chimp, Joao. You will feel sadness, joy, shock, and even amusement as you read of their individual stories of where they came from and how they eventually arrived at the sanctuary. Their human rescuers and caretakers are also featured in these stories and rightfully so. They are all heroes in my eyes. This is Doreen Ingram's first published writing and I look forward to reading more of her treasures. Kudos to Ms. Ingram!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book I Call Redemption, September 7, 2010
This review is from: My Sanctuary, A Place I Call Home (Paperback)
This book tells the story of an unfortunate number of Chimpanzees who were taken from their brutally killed mothers, captured and used as pets, sideshows, whipping boys. Then, a selfless organization under the Jane Goodall institute, led by a man driven to save these great apes, rescues these creatures from all over the world, bringing them to a sanctuary in South Africa. Told from the point of view of the elder Jao, it is a heartwarming story of hopelessness, fear, replaced by hope and fearlessness. Redemption by the very same species that originally mistreated these wonderful relatives of ours, maybe there is a chance for us.
