A lighter side of McDaniel, September 15, 2004
Even though this book is not the typical "cryin' and dyin'" stuff Lurlene McDaniel's readers are used to, My Secret Boyfriend is still a great read. She has created characters that are like most teenagers--self-conscious and pressured to be like everyone else. This novel is good because we see the main character get herself into a real pickle and get to watch her wiggle her way out of it. This would make a GREAT movie!

Not up to standard..., June 7, 2004
But maybe that is because this was originally released in the late 1980's, before she began writing realistic fiction. If you like McDaniel, give it a read, but be warned not to expect too much from it.

Not her best, December 24, 2009
I bought this book having been a fan of McDaniel in her past works. But with this novelette she definitely dropped the ball. First off it is very short. Something that a normal speed reader could finish in an hour. The plot is not only predictable it is dull and rather unmemorable. I ended up giving my copy away to my much younger cousin. I'd say if you are buying it for someone under the age of 11 then it would be okay. Anyone older than that may find it insulting
