The Battle for Serengeti, February 27, 2009
This review is from: My Serengeti Years: The Memoirs of an African Games Warden (Hardcover)
Myles Turner's posthumous memoirs, edited by Brian Jackman and enhanced by Bob Kuhn's splendid drawings, rhapsodize the birth pangs of and interminable assaults on Tanzania's incomparable Serengeti National Park. All who are familiar with the Serengeti will find their appreciation of it amplified by Turner's intimate account of his experience as its deputy chief game warden from November 1956 to April 1972. Those for whom it remains a dream destination may embrace it vicariously as he immerses them by small plane, Land Rover, and on foot in its rich fabric of life. Zealous and unapologetic in his defense of its wildlife against poachers, bitter in his repudiation of the killing of its animals by scientific investigators, Turner was emotionally conjoined with the Serengeti. While the book's two maps are inadequate for locating many of the places detailed in Turner's recollections, referencing them affords the reader a general orientation in accompanying him throughout the park. This enthralling book conveys every sensation of what has justifiably been called "the last place on earth."

Beauty and conservation of an eden against modern man, May 19, 2010
This review is from: My Serengeti Years: The Memoirs of an African Games Warden (Hardcover)
Mr TURNER describes the wild animals at home in the Serengeti. Nature takes its course : surprises behind every corner. Then the man comes in : poachers , opportunists of all kinds , tourists unaware ... This book shows the measure of dedication required by a game warden. Professionnalism and scientific interest of the modern man just won't do. The wildlife is described with sympathy . The animal was king in those days in Serengeti (1950 /1960' s)
