Great picture book!,
This review is from: My Shadow (Mass Market Paperback)
MY SHADOW (illustrated by Ted Rand) is on our short list for best picture book. Our four kids all loved the pictures and, of course, the poem. I would recommend the book as a toddler picture book rather than a beginning reader--the pictures are beautiful and engaging and the poem is suitable for little children.

My Shadow,

I have fond childhood memories of this poem, so I thought my preschoolers would enjoy it. The illustrations did not capture their attention, and it was difficult to reword the text and keep the rhyme. Better for 5yrs. and older.

This classic poem by Robert Louis Stevenson displayed by wonderful illustrations! Penny Dale's talent shines in the clear pictures, that re a joy to look at over and over again. It only made the poem better for me, and my entire classroom of 5 year olds!

I have the Rand (illustrator) version of this book. Unfortunately when I looked to obtain another copy, all the reviews are lumped together so it's hard to determine the best illustrated version. My 3 year-old absolutely loves the book. It's certainly one of our favorites. Great introduction to classic literature.

A Lively Illustration of the Classic Poem,
By Shanna A. Gonzalez "eyelevelbooks.com" (Gaithersburg, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Shadow (Paperback)
My Shadow, from A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson, is a vivid, cheerful poem in a child's voice, describing his shadow's characteristics and personality. Ted Rand has illustrated this classic poem with bright and lively pictures of children (and their shadows) from all over the world. This is a good choice for read-aloud and read-alone. The poem has a rhythmic poetic meter that will help keep toddlers interested, but enough descriptive and visual detail to interest the elementary-school crowd. It's an excellent supplement to a study of the sun, light, and darkness.

I am a first grade teacher who loves to teach poetry. I have tried to use this poem by Robert Louis Stevenson but there were a lot of images and phrases that where beyond the student's imagination. The wonderful pictures by Glenn Lang in this book bring this classic to life for the children. Great tool for teaching rhyming, rich vocabulary, word families, science, and art. Great to follow with an art project where they put themselves in a picture with their own shadow!

The illustrations for the book were enchanting, but the text to the original poem was altered. This was disappointing. I wanted to use it to introduce Robert Lewis Stevenson's poetry to a group of preschool children. Young children would have related to the original wording even though the "child" depicted was a mouse.
