Gr 3-5--Convinced that his older sister is practicing witchcraft, fourth-grade Norman is sure he's doomed. In the end it turns out that Elaine was really just learning the witches' scene from Macbeth for an audition. Conford's zippy story, with plenty of action and tension, has great potential if readers aren't initially turned off by the book's layout. The short sentences and large type are suitable for reluctant readers, but are negatively countered by the tiny margins and cramped text. The cover art will surely attract "Goosebumps" (Scholastic) fans, but the interior pencil drawings are mediocre and static. This is the second title in the series, and readers who get past the format will eagerly await the next entry.
