After finishing Anything Goes I couldn't wait for Ms. Tilles' next book. I was not disappointed. Ms. Tilles, as long as you continue to produce great books I will be a deciated fan. The closeness that these sister's have despite their frequent sisterly bickering is an example of how African American family remain in each others corner despite adversity. Keep up the quality writing Ms. Tilles!!!

Family Ties,
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In My Sisters' Corner (Paperback)
The day I received Jessica Tilles' latest novel, IN MY SISTERS' CORNER, I decided to read a couple of chapters before bed. A little over three hours later, I had devoured the entire book and was hungry for more. IN MY SISTERS' CORNER immediately catapulted me in the drama infused world of the Howard sisters. Free is the oldest and mother-like figure. She has taken it upon herself to keep her sisters in line no matter what it takes. China is the married mother of two. Her domineering husband and her "too-grown" kids make her life a struggle. Jade is successful, yet sexually confused. One moment she cannot have enough men, then the next moment she is a lesbian. Maya, the youngest sister, moved to California with dreams of becoming an actress, but instead ended up with a pimp. Jessica Tilles' sophomore novel is an instant hit. The story follows seemingly different women, bound only by their familial ties, as they cope with life and love. It follows their ups and downs and shows that no matter what curves life may throw, they are always in their sisters' corner. Tilles combines well-developed characters with an intriguing storyline that has a hint of suspense, a little romance, and a great deal of drama. I highly recommend this novel and cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next. Reviewed by Latoya Carter-Qawiyy

Sea of Emotions,
This review is from: In My Sisters' Corner (Paperback)
What a family!!! The bottom line in this story is - the love is there and strong amongst the 4 sisters. They all had issues and mega rollercoaster situations to face. There is nothing, and I mean "nothing" that this family of 4 sisters isn't plagued with. Ms. Tilles did a wonderful work in weaving "every" imaginable situation you could conceive to traumatize a family of girls with no guidance from parents, aunts, uncles or cousins....just the 4 women to rely on each other. This is a excellent book selection for book club.....many, many, many topics to discuss.

Sisterly love, Sisterly pain,
By Editor Dean "C&B Reviewer" (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In My Sisters' Corner (Paperback)
Sit back, relax, and get ready to indulge in the drama filled lives of the Howard sisters. This is one novel that will have you still talking about it long after you have set it down. Like most sisters, the Howard sisters have always been close. However, also like most sisters, they grew up and followed their own dreams that pulled them in different directions. Unfortunately, their lives were not turning out to be the fairytale lives they once dreamed of having. At the foundation of the sisters is Free Howard, the eldest of the four sisters and a successful business owner of a floral boutique. After their mother's death, Free finds herself filling her mother's shoes and trying to keep peace, harmony, and unity amongst the four sisters. Outside of family and business, Free doesn't have much of a social life. Well, not until she meets Samuel who could very possibly turn out to be her "Mr. Right". That is if she doesn't drive him right out of her life with her insecurities. Will Free continue to play the old maid, or will she finally learn to love herself and allow true love into her life? Jade, the next to the oldest sister, finds that Joy, her insecure and possessive lover, may not be the one for her after all. After Joy starts to demonstrate tendencies of a not so healthy relationship, Jade feels that it is time for her to rethink their relationship. Meeting Jonathon Meadows does not help matters. Jonathon is successful, debonair, and charming. The combination of those "three" qualities found in "one" man has Jade at the point where she is questioning her sexuality. But the possibility of Jade turning her life around and walking the straight and narrow is not an option as far as Joy is concerned. And she will stop at nothing to prove it to Jade. At her husband's request, China gave up her job to focus on and care for her husband and two children. Being the faithful wife and dutiful mother, China is clueless as to what is causing her husband to act so strange. However, the clues are there, staring her right in her face. After discovering his infidelities, China is forced to leave her husband, Ron, of fourteen years. Ron's cheating has been the substitution for his abusive tendencies. As if the fact of knowing that her husband is cheating is not enough, China is in for the shock of her life when her husband's secret lover is finally revealed. Maya, the baby of the four, is the sister who strayed from home against their mother's wishes to pursue her dream of becoming an aspiring actress. Only thing is she didn't get the part she was hoping to land. Instead, Maya finds herself at the mercy of her abusive pimp. Driven to the brink of insanity, Maya takes matters into her own hands in order to escape the hell that she has gotten herself caught up in. In My Sisters' Corner is filled with witty dialogue, shocking revelations, and tear-jerking moments. To me, this novel has a Soul Food flavah minus Big Momma.

If you can't count on family....,
By Flavah Reviewer (Winston Salem, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In My Sisters' Corner (Paperback)
Hold on to your seats, Jessica Tilles, author of Anything Goes, is back again with her sophomore novel, In My Sister's Corner! In My Sister's Corner features the lives of four sisters, Free, Jade, China, and Maya, who are all going through the ups and downs of life, you know "the norm". Well not quite the everyday repetitive trials and tribulations, more like complete chaos. Allowing us to wonder, when can you sincerely admit that you are a dysfunctional family and that no one is excluded from seeking around the clock professional help? From day one these sisters have been at odds with each other, using hardships to throw back in each others' face just to make themselves feel superior. Free, the oldest, has sworn to look over her sisters since the demise of their mother, resulting in the neglect of her own womanly needs. Finding Mr. Right may come sooner than she thinks, causing the continuous disarray to only escalate. Realizing that her mate is as psychotic as they come, Jade has had enough of the threats and over possessive mannerism that Joy so freely promotes in public. Finally putting an end to her destructive relationship, Jade decides to move on with her life and is suddenly comforted by her knight and shining armor. The only thing left now is to live happily ever after. Not so fast, there is one catch, "if I can't have you no one will". China has been married to Ron for over 12 years. She has put her life on hold and birthed two children, Ashley and Andre, just to keep her husband happy. A husband that doesn't appreciate her and tends to substitute her for a human punching bag. They always say what's done in the dark always come to light, but what happens when that light is to much to bear on one's soul, placing finality into a human hand? Unlike her sisters, Maya wants to be a famous actress. Unable to foresee the price of fame, Maya travels to Hollywood in search of her dream, but instead experiences her worst nightmare. Being paralyzed and left for dead is just the tip of the iceberg, if you even think about getting out of the fast life. In My Sister's Corner empowers readers to walk in the shoes of four sisters through creativity and a vivid imagination. A twisted tale of family bonding that justifies, "If you can't count on family, then who can you count on?" Monique Baldwin, Founder

What a Second Coming...,
By Michelle McGriff (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In My Sisters' Corner (Paperback)
This book was even better than the first offering. Jessica Tilles is surely growing as an artist, and soon to become a household name in powerfully written fiction. In My Sister's Corner digs deep into Ms. Tilles' bag of literary tricks and challenges her voice, style, and writing technique. With polyphonic, first person voicing, this story is told in a style that makes it truly unique. I can't wait to read her next book.
