Review

"Blake the snake just might be the most spectacular pet of all time."--Kirkus, starred

“…a loving salute to the unconventional pet heroes of an earlier era…”--Publishers Weekly

"Apart from its title, ‘My Snake Blake’ isn’t creepy at all. Blake the snake is a little boy’s perfect friend right out of the birthday-present box….The illustrator, Serge Bloch, has taken Randy Siegel’s silly, slim text and served it up as a dish straight out of 1960….He draws in the loose, bamboo –pen scribble that thrived in those days. Channeling artists like Saul Steinberg, Robert C. Osborn and Jules Feiffer, he gets the wry, relaxed humor just right. His boy is adorable, as is his snake.”--The New York Times

“Blake is a very lovely shade of green, but his best virtue is that he can write! He uses his body to form words which comes in very handy for things like communication and homework help. Just be careful; children get wonderful ideas from books and yours just might ask for a pet snake.”--Kiwi Magazine

“Engaging.”--BCCB

“…charming…”--Booklist

“Serge Bloch's marvelously economical drawings sustain a feeling of high good humor throughout this appropriately long-and-narrow picture book for 3- to 8-year-olds.”--The Wall Street Journal

About the Author

Randy Siegel is the author of Grandma's Smile for Roaring Brook Press, which Publisher'sWeekly called, "a wry and contemporary reality check on the going-to-Grandma's genre." Siegel has written for newspapers and magazines around the country and works for Advance Publications in New York City.

Serge Bloch is a Society of Illustrators Gold Medal winner and the recipient of France's Baobab Award. He illustrated Susie Morgenstern's A Book of Coupons, named an ALA Batchelder Honor Book, and has written and illustrated numerous books for children and young adults. He lives in Paris.

More About the Author

I began writing children's books a few years ago with the amazing Neal Porter at Roaring Brook Press (Macmillan). GRANDMA'S SMILE came out in 2010, got excellent reviews and enjoyed a stint on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble.com's children's best-seller charts. MY SNAKE BLAKE arrived in 2012 and according to a starred review in Kirkus, "just might be the most spectacular pet of all time. Clever, laugh-out-loud fun."

In The New York Times, the great Paul Zelinsky gave MY SNAKE BLAKE a terrific review. And The Wall Street Journal had this to say about MY SNAKE BLAKE:

"Blake turns out to be a dream pet; in other words, he does everything that a small boy might dream a pet could do. The snake is able to turn himself into cursive writing-that's how we know his name-as well as play baseball, scare bullies, eat yucky vegetables that the boy drops (on purpose) under the dinner table and answer tough homework questions, such as: "Which British poet wrote Songs of Innocence and Experience?" Serge Bloch's marvelously economical drawings sustain a feeling of high good humor throughout this appropriately long-and-narrow picture book for 3- to 8-year-olds."

MY SNAKE BLAKE was nominated for recognition at ALA and the Bologna Book Fair.

In 2013, I finished my first adult book as the "ghostwriter" for the one and only Burt King, America's most famous political consultant. I AM BURT KING: THE KING OF WASHINGTON, which was named a Parade Pick by Parade, is now available in print and as a Kindle edition on Amazon. (Truth be told, Burt King is a fictional character, which makes I AM BURT KING a work of fiction. A fun, satiric look at Washington to be specific. And definitely not for kids!)

According to George Stephanopoulos, chief political correspondent for ABC News, co-anchor of ABC News' Good Morning America and host of ABC's Sunday morning This Week, "Burt King embodies everything you always wanted to know about Washington but were afraid to ask. He'll make you laugh - and cry!"

These days, I'm writing a young adult novel which revolves around an issue near and dear to my heart. More soon!

This cute book puts snakes in a new light in making them heroes rather than villains that most people see them as. In this book, Blake the snake answers questions by twisting his long green body into the required answers. He knows math, can help with household chores, and even walk the dog, which would be a pretty neat trick, although I think it would cause some serious animosity with my two furry friends. The illustrations are cute and done in a wash or pastel watercolor technique using primarily the colors of red, green, black, and white.

I would think that a book about snakes would be more appreciated by boys than girls, and the themes seem more appropriate for kids at least four, although some three year olds might like the pictures and having the story read to them.

All in all, a nice children's book.

This delightful children's book is entertaining from beginning to end. The fun-filled story is funny and is brought to life through Amazing, colorful illustrations. It's easy to read, the story is exciting, and the characters are adorable. A charming book that a young child will share as the story grabs their attention. Highly Recommended for young children, parents with young children, and teachers. A fascinating book as such that's offered in school or at home will provide an enjoyable reading experience. Highly Recommended!

This is a fun read, very imaginative and inventive. It's nicely illustrated and just the right length for reading to our 4 yr old granddaughter at bedtime. We got it for her 4th birthday and it is a gift that keeps on giving.

Basically I'm an adult male, and bought this first as a light hearted joke. Read it (quick read), knowing it was meant for a child. Turned out it was the cutest, most clever book I've read in a long time. You will empathize, with the Child, the Mother, the Father, but mostly with Blake.

When you're a kid and it's nearly your birthday it takes a very special dad to buy you a bright green snake, especially when mom doesn't approve.

But not just any snake, this one's extra smart. Incredibly, he announces his name is Blake, writing it with his very long body which is excellent at spelling! He's brilliant at homework and so very useful that before long he's manages to make himself invaluable to the whole family, even his mom.

Snakes might not be the most popular of pets, but in this kid's book, Blake is the best in the world.

A great story beautifully illustrated.

I loved this book for my 4 year old grandson. My son likes snakes & thinks they are a maligned group, so he likes a positive spin on snakes. We're passing this on to my grandson. I very much enjoyed how Blake helped with everything. Also great the way Mom was afraid in the beginning & Blake spelled out "relax." The writing & pictures were very good. Altogether a good, interesing book. :)

I wanted to love this book because the NY Times review made it sound so adorable and kitschy. I ordered it sight unseen, and I'm a little sorry I did. Yes, the story is cute. Yes, the illustrations are sweetly reminiscent of the 1960s. But I cringe when I read some of the dialogue between the parents. I'm not a prude or a hard-ass, but my husband and I try to be conscious of how we communicate in front of our children, especially on matters that affect the whole family. Here, the husband brings home a snake without asking (or even warning) his wife; and when she has the gall to be upset about it, he acts like she's a total drag. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Oh wait, it's the standard sitcom model from the 1960s. And maybe even today (immature, inconsiderate husband + nagging, bitchy wife = ratings gold, apparently). I wish the author had chosen the dialogue with a little more consideration, especially since his target audience is boys. We'll still read the story--we'll just adjust have to the tone (and possibly even the wording) of the conversation between the parents.

I ordered this for my grandson's birthday. He checked this out of the library 3 times so I decided it was time to purchase it for his own library.
