Doesn't Have All The Great Songs...,
By
This review is from: My So-Called Life (1994 Television Series) (Audio CD)
Yes, it has "Make It Home" the homeless girl's anthem song from the "So-Called Angels" christmas episode, and the theme song, as well as "Soda Jerk" from Buffalo Tom, but it doesn't have all the others!
My biggest complaint was that it didn't have "Late At Night" otherwise remembered as "I'd Do It If I Could, I Hope You Know I Would" from the episode where Jordan walks down the hallway holding Angela's hand for the first time in public. I had been searching for YEARS to find that title!! I knew it was on a Buffalo Tom cd, but didn't know it was entitled "Late At Night." Also sorely missing from the cd are "Blister in the Sun" (Violent Femmes) where Angela gets over Jordan and dances around the room, "Dreams" (Cranberries) where Angela repeats it over and over on the first episode while crying of heartbreak, "Sedated" (Ramones) the song Rayanne attempts to sing for Jordan's band that's Between Names, and "What Is Love?" the moment Rickie dances with Delia at the school dance. I would have loved if the producers had included sporatic dialogue either leading into the songs or in between songs to help us reminesce such a wonderful show... This show seemed to be the first teen show to sprout a soundtrack of the generation, alongside 90210. Now there's plenty with Dawson's Creek and the O.C. But none of those held a candle to My So-Called life's brutal honesty, unfortunatley the soundtrack isn't that strong.

It's Good, But It Could Be So Much Better,

I tread lighly here for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, this is one of my favorite shows of all time. It's characters are rich, engaging and full of humor. I digress. Secondly, the album contains some really great music. Buffalo Tom, The Lemonheads, Afghan Whigs all check in with songs off of their releases contemporary to the show. All great songs, especially "Sodajerk." Juliana Hatfield and Sonic Youth wrote some new music for the album. Those songs are worth having in your collection, especially "Genetic," the Sonic Youth song. However, there are some very obvious omissions here, beginning with "Snuffy" Walden's original work for the show, most notably "Red.". If you were a precocious youth, you'll remember him from "thirtysomething." Also, missing are Jawbox's "Cruel Swing" and Violent Femmes "Blister In The Sun," if only because of the memory it provokes of Angela's "Freedom Dance." The show's producers could have certainly done a better job selecting music for this album. As it is, it captures the mood of the show. With a few easy additions, it could have exactly gotten the teen angst that the show conveyed with such startling accuracy. All told, the soundtrack is worth owning (especially if you are a fan of the show). Appreciate it for the songs it has, pine for the songs it doesn't.

All it could have been...,

We all remember watching the episode with the Buffalo Tom cameo, and we all remember wondering just what song it was that so brilliantly captured the moment, the series, and, let's face it, the all of those moments in our lives as well. "Late At Night" is that song and it somehow is not featured on the MSCL soundtrack. One cannot help but be shocked by this and other obvious ommissions (the afforementioned "Red", "Return to Innocence, and "Blister in the Sun"). However, what we do get is a new Juliana Hatfield song and a few other good tunes. Buffalo Tom's "Sodajerk" (later used in car commercials... arrr!), along with "Fountains of Wayne" from the Afghan Whigs and "South Carolina" from the Archers of Loaf hold up very well after all this time. A good addition to a collection, but I believe that the ommission of "Late at Night" hurt the soundtrack more than anything. I could easily overlook some of the lesser-known (and, in some cases, just plain LESSER) bands if some of the truly memorable songs had made the cut as well. But, hey, at least no Grateful Dead from the Dead tickets episode!

I really loved the show too, especially the music...so i looked up Buffalo Tom's CD...the song titled " Late at Night" is from the " Red Letter Day" album...i hope MSCL comes back soon, although i watched Lifetime and it showed a preview saying that it would air on that station..but i don't know when it will start!

So disappointing!,

This is one of the greatest shows ever on television that I even recorded all the episodes and still watch it today! I wish it would come back. So curious to know what "would have" happened between Brian and Angela. I also wish the soundtrack could've been better. Many great songs from the show are missing, especially the memorable ones like R.E.M's "Everybody Hurts", Enigma's "Return to Innocence", and among others mentioned by others (Sedated, Blister in the Sun, Red, Late at night, What is love). I might as well download these songs and create my own soundtrack! I sure miss the show...

More SNUFFY!!!,

Ignore this disc if you are a fan of the show. All of the music, save the last track featuring W.G. "Snuffy" Walden's original score, is disposable "hip" trash designed to sell more copies to stupid people. I should know. I bought one. It's not with this world any longer and I feel the better for it. True fans should demand a compilation of his various themes and toss these drink coasters at the company's building. Incidentally, you can find an entire albums-worth of equally touching "Snuffy" themes on the wonderful "thirtysomething" soundtrack. Yay!

missing key songs,

If youre a fan of the whole genre of MSCL then you'll enjoy this cd, but as previously stated important songs in the series failed to make it onto the cd. Such songs are "Late at Night" by Buffalo Tom, which is the song in the famous hand holding scene. Some of the songs on this cd were actually in the show such as 1,2 and the theme song. but if your looking for red, the song jared leto sings in why jordan cant read u can skip this cd and download it off the internet. Overall if youre a diehard fan of MSCL i recommend it but if youre not skip it.

A teenage fan,
This review is from: My So-Called Life (1994 Television Series) (Audio CD)
O.K., I started watching MSCL a year ago-reruns. I wasn't alive when the show first came on, but I fell in love with it, it was the first-and only-show that amazed me. The script was spectacular, the actors amazing, and the music was to die for!No show will ever be able to top this one! I was heartbroken when I learned that the show had been canceled, and when I found out there was a cd, it brought my hopes up again! I soon realized the truth, all the really amazing songs, like "Red", and "Blister In The Sun", weren't on the cd! i was so suprized! And "What is Love" from the episode Life of Brian (my favorite episode, Brian-I love you!) wasn't there either! If You are a MSCL fanatic, make sure you read these reviews! (P.S.-Person who wrote the review about adding actual lines from the show in the cd, you are so right! That would have been great!)

I LOVE MSCL but this soundtrack is a real bummer because the 2 reasons i watch the show are the clothes and the music but they left out a most of the good songs like "red", "i wanna be sedated" and "blister in the sun"(my favorite part of the whole series is where she was dancing to that song). what i ended up doing was buying this cd and adding the songs i felt were missing.

More early series background music than memorable show music,
By Bowman_L@deerfield.com (Deerfield, MA) - See all my reviews

Most of these songs were songs in the background than really important songs. Really wish they had Jared singing "Red" and "Sedated" on this CD, and less of songs I've never heard of.
