This review is from: My Son Eric (Hardcover)
My Son Eric is written with compassion, truth, and sensitivity. I am the mom of two gay children whom I love dearly and respect highly. Thank you to Mary Vorhek for the insight and wisdom to have written this beautiful book telling the truth about our gay children.

This review is from: My Son Eric: A Mother Struggles To Accept Her Gay Son and Discovers Herself (Paperback)
Mary Borhek does an exquisite job of taking us through her journey of acceptance of her gay son. She explains how scary and complicated this journey was for her and how she questioned her faith without losing it! This book is a must have for anyone who is gay in a christian family and dealing with these issues. It also is a great resource for family and friends!

This book helped me immensely in accepting myself. I have only recently come out to my parents and hope to send this book to my Mother when things calm down. My parents are very much like Mary and Eric's father are in this book. I have much hope that this book will help, at least my mother, come to some understanding that it is okay to be gay and Christian. This is a must read, it is phenomenal.

This book was truly eye-opening and heart-opening for me. Although I do not have direct relatives who are gay, reading about Mary Borhek's journey helped me to be more understanding and accepting of homosexuality (and, I believe, other social challenges) and is helping me to understand and accept myself better. In addition, her heartfelt questioning of the Bible and practices of the Christian church is helping me in my lifelong search to find ways of reading the Bible that contribute to peace and harmony on earth. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding themself better, expecially in relation to social issues; and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with acceptance of a gay person in their life.

I find it hard to believe that so little has changed in the Christian Church in 30 years. Even with new discoveries in science, we still seem to be cloaked in fear and denial. How sad and disappointing. If only we all had the courage to examine what we believe and allow God to speak to us in the same way that Mary Borhek did. The world would certainly be a better place. I hope we will not find ourselves at the same standstill when another 30 years have gone by. We have got to get better at welcoming, befriending, accepting, and loving the members of the LGBT community, or we will miss out on some of God's most precious blessings. Church, it's time to repent! |
