After his success with "Gangsta's Paradise" from 1995-96, he comes back in summer of 1997 with My Soul, another dope album from Coolio. Many say he is too pop, but regardless, I enjoy him. He has a dope rap voice, and I do like his style, and he has great producers behind him. Sonically, this album is somewhat similar to Gangsta's Paradise, full of great G-Funk beats that are perfect for the ride. Wino and Vic C handle a couple songs, and Romeo, who handled much of Gangsta's.... handled a huge part of this one too. This album is definitely a good party album, for the beats and lyrics on many tracks reflect a fun vibe. "One Mo" (with 40 Thevz) is one for sure, a dope lowrider joint with a bouncy beat and a great vocoder riff in the hook. "Ooh La La" is a bump and grind sex joint with a phat funky beat, and "Throwdown 2000" is a nice party jam with a P-Funk type beat as is "Can I Get Down 1X;" both are also great for a nice 3 wheel motion ride! "Knight Fall" is a bit darker with more serious lyrics and a bit more pessimistic. "Homeboy" features Montell Jordan in the hook, and is awesome. Coolio wants to send some love to the homies, and he wants you to do the same. The beat is relaxing with a nice twangy riff. Coolio wants to keep in touch with his soul on the title track with a nice relaxing guitar ridden beat. C U When U Get There (w/ 40 Thevz) is serious and socially aware. The beat is fantstic with good vocal backing in the hook. Overall, this album is awesome, and fun to listen to. Definitely, this one is a party starter, with a couple more serious tracks.

"Gangsta's Paradise" is easily Coolio's most recgonizable song and his most acclaimed album by critics and mainstream outlets. But "My Soul" is among his best work, along with "It Takes A Thief".

You can essentially break down Coolio's albums in this manner.

Step 1: Disregard the singles when judging how good the album is. He always puts out good singles, but critics and casual rap fans tend to judge his album solely on the singles.

Step 2: Compare the rest of the songs (the songs that bandwagon fans consider to be filler)

My Soul's singles weren't as outstanding as his previous singles, which could be a good thing. Not necessarily a good thing for the record company or for Coolio's career/pay-day. But it allows the listener to get deeper into the album without distraction.

The best songs:
.2 Minutes & 21 Seconds Of Funk
.One Mo (the voice-box hook is perfect)
.The Devil Is Dope
.Hit Em
.Knight Falls
.Ooh La La
.Can U Dig It?
.Can I Get Down 1X
.C U When U Get There (not my favorite Coolio song by any means, but it grows on you)

^I listed about half of the album, and the other songs might be your preference...that's how consistent the album is. It really is some of his best work. I prefer "It Takes A Thief" for it's funk influence. However, you should definitelly check this out. Don't let the fact that it wasn't a huge commercial success scare you away, you'd be robbing yourself of a great album.

Some People May Think Some Of the Songs Do Not Make Sence Just Have to Listen

On Nightfall:I percieve It In Refference To Suge Knight:

There Is Nothing to Fear But the Fear It Self And If You Control The Fear Then The fear turns To Wealth.

Which Makes Sence with Its release in 1997. Good Cd.

Coolio tries hard and it is tough to identify what he is as a rapper, he delivers hard at times, and then messages of warning and then some pop...ok album
