Book Description

December 21, 2010
Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

Rachel's young adult series, Soul Screamers, debuted on August 1, 2009. My SOUL TO TAKE is the first in the series, about a teenage bean sidhe (banshee) trying to balance a normal high school experience with the terrifying, hidden world she's just discovered. She shares her workspace with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks-seriously-and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review: My Soul to Steal December 28, 2010
Format:Paperback
My Soul to Steal is the fourth book in the series, and probably one of the most intense in my opinion. However intense it was in the end the final peak of the plot was a little weak for me. There was a lot of build up and then it was just done. There is a pattern with this series that I haven't decided if I like it or not. It seems like Nash and Kay are always battling their relationship more than they are anything else. I'd really like to see one book where they have a somewhat, albeit strained, relationship and more focus on the Netherworld-hellions.
In this book Nash's ex girlfriend shows up and tries to steal the show. Very early on she starts wreaking havoc on both Nash and Kay's relationship as well as the school, or so Kay believes. Knowing that things aren't a coincidence anymore she decides she's got to figure out what's causing the chaos in the school. There are a few twists that I didn't expect and that kept me reading. I wanted to know how it ended.
This was a very quick read as I read it in just a few hours.

What I like: Tod is still my favorite character. He's the only one that stays consistent and isn't whiny. There is one part of the book that I was pretty pissed at what he did, but I guess I understand. Also, there is a hint that Tod like Kay and I'm afraid he may be more of a problem later on down the road, although I hope not.

What I love: Harmony. There is something about her that makes me smile no matter how small her part in the book is. I think of a very warm mom that always makes sure the smell of cookies permeates the house, and that paints a great picture!

What I would change: I wish there was more development to Avrie and the Netherworld. We get bits and pieces, but I feel like there could be so much more. I'd like to know why Avrie plots the way he does and what's really behind everything. There is an obsession with Kay, but I'm still not really sure why.

Would I recommend: Probably, but it's not on the top of my list of books to recommend. As I said the writing is intense but the end leaves me feeling almost hollow. It is an easy read, so I would recommend it for something quick.

I remember saying that Rachel Vincent was brave for the places she took her characters in the last Soul Screamers book, but that was nothing compared to what she's done to them in MY SOUL TO STEAL.

Sabine. Obviously we're not supposed to like Nash's ex-girlfriend who shows up and starts trying to pick things back up where they left off, but Rachel Vincent might have taken it a bit too far. I wanted to reach into the book and physically beat her! She's a psycho, vindictive, vengeful, manipulative slutbag. I'm getting angry again just thinking about her. Anyone who showed her the slightest compassion--and I mean anyone--got knocked down a peg in my estimation. Think Lila from season two of Dexter.

And really, did Kaylee and Nash need any more problems with their relationship after what happened in MY SOUL TO KEEP? Apparently so, because Sabine worms her way into the middle of things like a parasite. Emotions run high for everyone and the fallout proves to be just as big. And I don't just mean for the characters.

When I start a series and invest myself in new characters, I start to build certain expectations. Who will end up with who, who will become a villain, who will be redeemed etc. I had very clear expectations going into MY SOUL TO STEAL, and I should have known after MY SOUL TO KEEP that Rachel Vincent never does what I expect. There's a big, huge, ginormous thing that happens in this book, or rather starts to happen, that I initially felt so betrayed by that part of me didn't want to finish the book. I did of course, and I'm amazed at how quickly I started to warm up to the idea of what's to come.

Nothing is set in stone for this series. Rachel will probably surprise me again in the next book, IF I DIE, but that's part of what makes this series so exciting. The last two books have been shocking, but they've also been my favorites. Can't wait.

Sexual Content: Kissing. Lots of references to sex.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but somewhat disappointing January 3, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well, if your expecting the issues with Kaylee and Nash to be resolved by the end of this book, you will be as disappointed as I was. First off, I wanted to say I have loved the series so far, and I am a huge fan of Rachel Vincent's books. This book in the series was not as good as I expected it to be, especially after having to wait so long for it to come out. I did not mind the introduction of Sabine, in fact, I kind of started to like her by the end. I found Kaylee to be particularly annoying in this book for some reason. She is constantly going back and forth about what she wants with Nash. The ending was good in that things were at least stable and set up for the next installment without being a major cliffhanger for which I am very greatful! I don't know, I can't explain it, I just felt like there was not much to this book. No romance to speak of. Maybe its just me, but this was just a forgettable plot in that I will have to re-read it to remember what happened by the time the next book comes out.

do you agree with Tod? (spoilers)
I don't either. IMO Nash and Kaylee fit each other perfectly. They make each other stronger, and the fact they don't always depend on one another (Like Nash and Sabine did at one point) is healthy. If anything, I feel the relationship between Nash and Sabine was the one that's not healthy. They... Read more

Question about Sabine
Yes, she is the 7th daughter of the 7th daughter, because in My Soul to Steal it says that maras are born in human families and are the 7th daughter of the 7th daughter. It doesn't say in MStS about her lifetime but I don't know about in Kiss me deadly because I haven't read it.
