I agree that we need to love and respect the men and women of God who faithfully preach the Word, but we must only follo them as they follow Christ. The dangers that I see from the teaching of this book is that there is constant emphasis on the undershepherds (pastors) rather than the Good Shepherd. Pastors and other church leaders are supposed to point people to Jesus Christ as the ONLY Mediator between God and man. It is HIS power, His wisdom, His counsels that unlock our destiny, not a pastor or any other teacher.
As much as I like the teachings of Pastor Bynum-Weeks on holiness and living right before God, she unfortunately has missed the mark on this one. When the Bible says that we are to regard older members of the church as mothers and fathers, it does not mean implicit obedience without spiritual discernment. We are to obey the Word of God first and foremost! And pastors are not above correction or reproof because they are 'the Lord's anointed'. David was annointed king of Israel, yet the prophet Nathan was duty-bound to rebuke and correct him when he sinned with Bathsheba. It is this mentality that leadership in the church are above reproof from the laity that is causing all kinds of foolishness and exploitation to take place.
Do we need guidance, correction and rebuke? Yes! Is that part of the work of pastors? Yes! But are we to follow everything they say without checking with the Word? Certainly not!!! We are to study God's Word for ourselves, and only follow the counsel of pastors who lift up the Word of God as THE standard for our lives. Any minister that says that they hold your destiny in their hands, and that in order to get to the next level you must follow their counsel is a false prophet! Run from them like the plague, and fall at the feet of Jesus alone.

Seeking spiritual leadership has been my heart's desire for a while now. Anyone that takes spiritual covering seriously should grab this book, it's not only for those seeking a spiritual father/mother in the Lord, but also displays how you are to obey and regard those that are accountable for your soul, as well as, assisting your spiritual parents in aiding them in the call of God for their lives. Juanita Bynum Weeks, this book is excellent!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected, yet Powerful, June 16, 2005
This review is from: My Spiritual Inheritance: Walking in your destiny (Hardcover)
Recommended read for EVERY Christian.
I wasn't sure about the title, yet I was led to buy this book and read it.
When I began to read it I found that what I had come to understand in a Bible study was confirmed and expounded in this book.
Some say it is about pastors. Some say it is about completely submitting to pastoral authority.
It is not. It is simply about the responsibility of leadership to church body and the responsibility of church body to leadership. Yet is so much more than that. It gives insight to the underlying problems that do and can occur in our lives/church as we walk in obedience to God and his call on our lives.

Reccomend reading Myles Munroe's book on Vision if you don't know what God as called you to do/be. Everyone has a calling. Do you know what your's is? If you do you will find this book helpful!

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Title, Right Pew!, March 9, 2005
This review is from: My Spiritual Inheritance: Walking in your destiny (Hardcover)
Too bad this book is not really about Bynum's spiritual inheritance or her walking in her destiny. Instead the Oral Roberts Bible College affiliated graduate spends pages giving spiritual spankings to those who resist being corrected or rebuked by pastors. This really is a book about pastoral leadership because most of the chapters are addressing pastors who are encouraged to act like spiritual parents. Where is God in this book? Still in heaven, evidently because the focus is not on our supernatural relationship with God or on what is already guaranteed to every believer. Instead the emphasis is on how the average lay person can earn the right to heavenly rewards. The answer according to Juanita Bynum: submit to earthly authority. Now that's not my understanding of the WORD! This books serves as a cogent reminder that not everyone who preaches is preaching the same WORD. A little scripture seems to go a long way these days. The good thing about this Bynum book... she finally stopped putting Ph.D. behind her name for the Doctorate in Theology her bio says she earned from Truth for Living Bible College. After reading this book the real question is: Whose truth is presented in this book? Due to a lack of adequate editing the chapters in MY SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE are not connected to a theme or even the title of the book. It makes you wonder if the book was written more for profit than spiritual enlightenment. It would have been more interesting to have read about Juanita Bynum's testimonies about her harvest coming in because of her spiritual inheritance. Instead this reader was left with two questions: WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT? WHAT IS THIS BOOK REALLY ABOUT? My spiritual inheritance was guaranteed on Calvary!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Shepherding Movement is Revived, January 10, 2005
This review is from: My Spiritual Inheritance: Walking in your destiny (Hardcover)
This book is just another avenue for the Shepherding Movement to be rekindled. The "covering" philosophy is not a biblical one.The word covering is not even mentioned in this context in the Bible. It is an adaptation of the "Shepherding Movement" doctrine started back in the 70's in Fort Lauderdale Florida. The only covering the body of Christ needs is Jesus himself.Remember Psalm 23. This is exactly what Martin Luther of Germany wanted the church to get away from. In him we have the father of the Protestant Reformation which broke away from Catholic Authoritarianism, which told people that they had to speak with a preist in order to have their sins atoned for. The Catholics were taught that they did not have a direct link to God themselves and are still taught that to this day. However the bible clearly says that we can go to God for ourselves and that we do not need "Father Flannigan" to keep us from error because we have the Holy Ghost. Byunum does not believe this at all, she thinks we will stray if we do not have spiritual parents who keep us in "check" we are then called "bastards". Which is a lie from the pit of hell. There is nothing wrong with having spiritual parents who can foster your growth and yes we should love and reverence those who are feeding us the Word of God. But people like Mrs. Bynum-Weeks will take it to the next level as if your blessing will be cut off if you do not jump through hoops for your man or woman of God. Many people who have taken on the Shepherding/Covering philosophy have misused and abused people in the name of God and tried to control them. In other words, if a "shepherd" tells you to do something that you may find to be contrary to the Spirit of Christ in you or the Word of God, you must still obey because this person is your covering. This is what Juanita believes. She believes that she can hear the voice of God better than her flock and therefore this puts her in a superior position and makes others nothing more than dumb sheep who can not hear the voice of God for themselves which invalidates the work of the Holy Spirit or Christ as your main intercessor. She is trying to introduce the Black community to the Shepherding movement and aid in re-enslaving Black people once again except the new master looks like us and stands behind the pulipt. She may not be consciously aware of it, but this is what the outcome produces. It give pastors total control and the ability to manipulate people and stunt their followers growth especially if it's not done in the right spirit. I pray the good pastors that are still out there will not be deceived.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Truly is No Substitute for Obedience, May 10, 2007
This review is from: My Spiritual Inheritance: Walking in your destiny (Hardcover)
My primary interest in checking out MY SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE from the library was to learn more about the Jezebel spirit, as that is the only book that came up under that keyword search. I did find a rich chapter on that and many other chapters on so much more.

Juanita Bynum, the author writes of the importance of one's relationship with their pastor, their spiritual parents, in God's divine order of releasing His power in and through His children. She writes that as a person's relationship is with their pastor, so is their relationship with God. This is almost identical to a statement I had heard several months ago from a pastor in his own pulpit, a pastor who said: As your relationship is with God, so is your relationship with your spouse, that in the same message where he also said that a rebellious nature is like trying to hold on to something slipping through your hands like sand. Both statements point out the critical importance of these intimate, yet temporal relationships in terms of our ultimate accountability to God, who is jealous over His own. Bynum speaks of divine relationships, known first in the spiritual realm, and then on earth, and she cites scriptural precedents (e.g. Samuel knowing Saul before they met).

In Chapter 1, "The Voice of the Father," the author counsels, "Remember this: Any place where you are not receiving the manifold blessings of God is your spiritual Egypt," a truth I had learned through other avenues only during the past year or so.

In Chapter 2, as soon as that, she addresses, "The Power of Obedience," in such a way that reminded me of a key message entitled, "No Substitute for Obedience," given by Pastor Phillip Gregory Johnson, SonCoast Pentecostal Church in Hudson, Florida, on September 3, 2006, a message from which I borrowed the title for this review, for truly there is no substitute for obedience. Bynum writes quite a bit about rebellion (as the sin of witchcraft) and the irreplaceable importance of uncompromising obedience to God.

In Chapter 11, "The Seduction of Jezebel," Bynum makes several salient points about dealing with this most destructive spirit: a) Jezebel is not the root, she is the deception, the decoy; she is controlled by the "proud and lofty thing" that controls her, Baal and Ashtoreth; therefore, we are not just fighting against a mere "woman" (that can manifest in men or women), but against a stronghold of Satan; b) Since Jezebel operates legally (based on legitimate authority that has been yielded to her) this spirit cannot be dealt with by rebuking it; c) Obedience to God, uncompromising obedience to God (not my will, but Thy will be done) is the primary means of dealing with this stronghold of Satan; d)"As a people of God, we have to come against Jezebel as a company. We cannot be divided--because when we stand as one and all say the same thing, Jezebel cannot find a corner to whisper in." (p. 221)

Speaking as true prophetess herself, Bynum advises that a false spirit (e.g. a Jezebel spirit, which acts as a chameleon, changing into whatever it needs to be to deceive) may also prophesy, may also bless, however, a false spirit will never prophesy the *process* God will take you through in getting you to where He is taking you. So, if someone in a spirit of prophesy, for example, tells you that God is going to bring His truth home to you by burning through certain imperfect bulwarks you have built in your life and will do so with His own holy fire, then that is a word of God through that person that should be heeded; that, as well as whatever else God may have to say to you through them.

The author is so balanced, so skillful in handling scripture, so authoritative in how she handles the subject matter, that (other than the chapter on generational curses, a concept I question) I do feel this book is well worth reading. I see that she has also developed some study aids to go along with it, and I believe the content is rich enough to warrant that depth of delving into this subject matter, which is so relevant for this time, this generation.

Bynum recommends Jezebel Vs. Elijah: The Great End Time Clash by Bree Keyton, a book I definitely plan to read because Bynum recommended it.
